Daniel 7

We encounter a shift in the tenor of the book of Daniel as we come to chapter 7. Up until now, Daniel has been told mostly as a story (with some futuristic visions included), with one event happening after another. The remainder of the book will be visions given to Daniel, and this is not in the same chronological sequence as the first six chapters. Yet this need not dissuade or confuse us. Though parts of what we’ll encounter will seem mysterious to us, there are still many clear and solid truths we as believers can glean from the remainder of the book.

We call “good” the day we remember Christ’s suffering on the cross to save us. This coming Good Friday, April 3 we’ll have a special worship service at 6:00 p.m. Join us in the sanctuary for a time of worship reverence, and reflection as we observe the transaction that took place on our behalf. We will also have optional stations set up in the church to demonstrate the magnitude of what Christ did for us.

Passion Week begins with the Triumphal Entry, an event recorded in all four gospels. Jesus, the promised Messiah and King, arrives not as a conqueror would but coming instead in humility. The crowds call out to Him to save (“Hosanna!”), a recognition that He is the Messiah indeed.

Daniel Chapter 4 reveals that the Most High God sovereignly rules over every kingdom, in every time, and over every human heart. Through Nebuchadnezzar’s rise, warning, humiliation, and restoration, we see that God mercifully warns before He disciplines, humbles the proud, and restores the repentant. Success is never proof of self-sufficiency, and pride is spiritually insane before a Holy God. Yet when we lift our eyes to God in humility, He responds with grace. Therefore, in every season—whether abundance, trial, or discipline—we are called to humble ourselves, fear Him, and praise the One whose dominion is everlasting and whose purposes cannot be thwarted.

Daniel 3

God is able to deliver, He is present in suffering, and He is faithful to preserve. We face modern idols demanding allegiance—success, approval, comfort, autonomy—and modern fiery furnaces of rejection, loss, and pressure to compromise truth. Yet the same God who stood in the fire with them calls us to unwavering allegiance, assuring us that faith in Him quenches the power of fire and that nothing can separate His people from His saving, eternal love.

Daniel 2:31-49
As the conclusion to our time in this second chapter, we see Daniel present the interpretation of the king’s dream. Though filled with fantastic imagery, the meaning is straightforward. Beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, a series of earthly kingdoms will dominate the entire region. That God is able to so clearly explain this history before it happens reveals His control of the events. But most importantly, the dream also contains another, heavenly kingdom, the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. His kingdom will overcome all others and will be eternal.

Daniel 2:1-30
In the first half of this second chapter of Daniel, we see that Daniel lives in a world not so unlike our own. We could be said to be living in Babylon, a culture that is unreasonable, ungodly, untouched by truth, even
unbearable (apart from God). Yet in this story, in the responses of Daniel, we see a call and an example to give a godly response, one that both honors and proclaims the God of heaven to a world in darkness.

Daniel Chapter 1

The Book of Daniel, written around 530 BC, speaks powerfully and intentionally to exiles then and in our day today. Daniel teaches us how to live faithfully in Babylon while trusting His sovereign rule over all kingdoms, tribes and nations. In Chapter 1, God proves He is sovereign over both Jerusalem and Babylon, preserving His people and their identity as His people even as the world attempts to rename, reshape, reorient, and reeducate them. Daniel and his friends refuse defilement and compromise, not by withdrawal or rebellion, but through their faith and trust in God, relying on Him for true nourishment, wisdom, and favor. God proves over and over that He is faithful and honors and rewards the faithfulness of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

Matthew 5:14-16
This passage is a fitting one on which to end our Lampstand series. Jesus states in plain, direct language that we are the light of the world. Of course, we know this is only true because it is His light in us that shines, not some light that we produce. But in two encouraging illustrations He gives us assurance of His intention that His light shine through us to the world at large, and that this is indeed what will happen. All of this is for the glory of God.

Philippians 2:14-16

For a church to fulfill its calling as a lampstand, it must display the unity to which Scripture repeatedly calls us. Working towards unity is indeed a part of our sanctification, making us look more like the Savior who prayed for our unity. When our hearts toward one another and actions toward one another are “pure and blameless,” we will display a light that the world does not know on its own.
