It’s a joy to share that Gable Chapel is the new home for a stunning piece of stained-glass history, carrying a deep legacy of love and community.

The piece was originally created by Grant Dyer of Indianola, commissioned by Gene and Eleanor Smith in loving memory of their daughter, Sana Kay Smith Danielson (d. 1991), for the original Chapel at The Village. In the early 2000s, it was moved to a smaller meditation chapel there, until that space was eliminated during 2026 renovations.

Thankfully, this sacred artwork was saved by Yvonne Oyler (daughter of Rev. Dr. Ev Laning), who coordinated rehoming of the piece to the church. It was then meticulously preserved and given light by Darko and his team at The Stained Glass Store in Grimes, with funding generously provided by our Memorial Committee.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped rescue, restore, and welcome this beautiful tribute into our chapel. Next time you visit, please take a moment to look at its warm glow, remember our saints gone by, and reflect on the community effort that brought it here.

⛪️🎶Music Appreciation Monday🎶⛪️
Meet Nancy, a part of our 10:30 band!
❤️
My name is Nancy Kotz. I am a recently retired Des Moines elementary music teacher.
🎶
I am married. We have 2 sons who each have families with a total of 3 grandbabies.
🎤
I am a vocalist at the 10:30 service.
⛪️
My favorite song is the hymn "Morning Has Broken". Sharing the traditions that hymns bring to a community is my favorite part of song leading.

The rain couldn’t keep us away on Rally Day! What a great kick off to the Fall Programing Season! Outdoor and Indoor Activities! A great Combined Service, the Chancel Choir, and a BBQ. It was a good day to be in Fellowship and have A Place at the Table. Even a few words of wisdom from Dolly Parton!

Tomorrow is Rally Day at First UMC! And while we were supposed to talk about the friendship of David and Jonathan, sometimes the world gives you a reason to change the sermon.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about Dolly Parton, Jesus, and the power of a bigger table - a place where we can hold onto our convictions, see one another beyond our labels, and make room for more people.

And then we’ll do the best part after worship: eat together around tables. ❤️

Come join us!
