I will be providing group and individual spiritual direction to some of the participants of this cohort. What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is a practice where an individual, known as the directee, seeks guidance and support in their spiritual journey from a trained and experienced spiritual director. The spiritual director provides a listening presence, offering insights, encouragement, and discernment without imposing their own beliefs. The focus is on deepening one's eternal relationship with the trinity, exploring faith, and fostering spiritual growth. It's a confidential, contemplative process aimed at helping individuals navigate and understand their spiritual experiences and challenges. You can schedule a complementary session on my website. Introduction to Rick McDaniel
Being contemplative by nature, as well as gifted and experienced in pastoral leadership, Rick McDaniel was drawn to the idea of spiritual direction. After 20 years serving as a full time senior pastor as well as a church planter and the regional church planting coordinator for the NW Vineyard church movement, Rick was compelled to shift from large group leadership to one on one companioning through spiritual direction.

As he planned for retirement, he enrolled in a 2 year certified training cohort through The School of Sustainable Faith, and opened his own private practice, Calm Waters Spiritual Direction. Rick believes that spiritual direction is one of the most effective ways to move through the transitions of life from where we are to where we want to be in our spiritual growth and connection with the Trinity.

Widowed in 2020 after 50 years of marriage, Rick has recently had the opportunity to put in place some of the treasured practices of spiritual direction and contemplation in his own life. Currently, Rick is ready to dive into a major transition of his own, and will soon be moving to Indiana and getting married.

Rick has 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren which continually give him great measures of joy. In Rick’s leisure time, he enjoys photography and continues to practice his lifelong love of sailing.

We are living through a period of global disorder. People around the world are experiencing tremendous suffering, uncertainty, and disruption to their lives. Reality is being unveiled --
Systems of evil and injustice are being seen in greater clarity and our collective normal has been radically upended. Walking through this chaos and despair can be difficult: but, ultimately, it is when everything seems adrift that the spiritual journey becomes both an anchor and a sail. God uses tragedy, suffering, pain and even death to guide us into greater love.
