There is no “Judeo-Christian orthodoxy”. This is simply a call to return to what persecuted non-conformist Christians such as Baptists fled in Europe and worked so hard to prevent being repeated here. Progressive Christians need to stand against this, following Jesus’ command to treat others as we want to be treated, and not only because people like Beckwith will be as happy to limit our freedom as that of Muslims if they are given their way.

It is astonishing that some people treat Christian nationalism as authentic and the default form of Christianity, when time and again its proponents make clear that they have no idea what’s in the Bible.

Those who would use state power to attack Islam and religions other than Christianity, always either already do the same to progressive and liberal Christians, or will turn their attention to us eventually. Most of us support religious freedom for all on principle, of course, but if you haven't taken a stand on this, it would make sense to do so even out of self-interest.

Micah Beckwith's attack on religious freedom in Indiana is one that must trouble Baptists and other Christians, and not only Muslims.
