We have seen the great "X" debate for years. It swirls around the world and infuriates many Christians. You may have said, seen, or heard that we need to put "Christ" back in CHRISTmas.
It is actually a fairly overlooked and critisized practice when people or businesses use X-mas to abbreviate the holiday that we celebrate the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ.
How in depth have you or your local congregations analyzed the basis for substituting X. Have you ever seen the bracelets that have letters similiar to IXOYE and represent the phrase Jesus Christ God's Son Savior. Christians have taken the Greek Word for fish which subsequently spell out the above saying. The call within the Bible for us to be "fishermen" lead a clever marketing company to create wrist bands, shirts, and tons of Jesus Christ God's Son Savior merchandise.
Here is how it plays out in Greek:
Iesous (Iasoos) is Jesus. The first letter is ‘iota’, Ιησους.
Xristos (Christos) is Christ. The first letter is ‘chi’, Χριστóς.
Theou (Theou) is God. The first letter is ‘theta’, Θεοῦ.
Yios (Huios) is Son. The first letter is ‘upsilon’, Υἱός.
Sotare (Sotare) is Savior. The first letter is sigma’, Σωτήρ.
The word is also the Greek word for “fish," icthus, ἰχθύς which when spelled in capital letters in Greek is ΙΧΘΥΣ. Remember, Jesus called the fishermen to be fishers of men (Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17). Jesus used the metaphor to represent evangelism in the proclamation of the gospel by which people are saved from their sins. Christians began using the fish as a symbol for Christianity in the first century.
Ok, so now....let's disect the word "Christmas": The World Book Encyclopedia defines "Christmas" as follows: "The word Christmas comes from "Cristes Maesse", an early English phrase that means "Mass of Christ."
The Celebration and Day that we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ is a day that we honor as a MASS or Celebration, Service, Day of Worship for Jesus Christ.
NOW, put it all together....
X= Xristos (Christos) is Christ. The first letter is ‘chi’, Χριστóς.
Mas= Mass (Catholic Term for Worship Service/ Celebration)
So, What is X-Mas? Xritos(Christos) + Mas X-Mas is still Christmas.
Take the time instead of adding flames to the fire and be proud that no matter, who thinks that adding an X instead of Christ or that they are rejecting The Lord by doing this..... Ultimately to those with knowledge, are aware that X or Christ are the same thing..
SOOOO.... Have a Merry Christmas or Merry Xmas or Merry Xristos Douleia!
