Green Chalice: Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Green Chalice: Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) A Partnership Ministry of Disciples Home Missions and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) This group authored the Alverna Covenant.

Eco-justice ministries in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) grew out of the 1977 General Assembly resolution that called for the development of a Task Force on Ecology. In recent years, a new effort at environmental stewardship has taken root. General Ministries have recognized their part in caring for creation, for example, by creating programs for congregations to green their buildings

(Church Extension) and their grounds (DHM). Christian Board of Publication has committed to using recycled paper stock in their publications. DHM and Week of Compassion have partnered to make Equal Exchange coffee available to Disciples. DHM has worked in behalf of the environment through the promotion of the Alverna Covenant as well as serving as a liaison to the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Working Group and congregations. Recent work has included the Green Church Program as well as Return to the Garden. Green Chalice in Kentucky are Disciples connecting Christian faith, spiritual practice and environmental consciousness in order to demonstrate the fullness of God’s shalom. Kentucky Disciples frame their ministry with one question, “What must we do to live our faith?” For a growing number of Kentucky Disciples that answer includes care for God’s creation through adopting sustainable lifestyles both personally and as a congregation. Green Chalice was called into being in 2007 to help Kentucky Disciples live sustainable lives in harmony with all creation. These two ministries have come together to partner to serve all Disciples in all regions in creation care ministries. The Reverend Carol Devine, has been called to serve as the leadership for this initiative.

This is a prophetic summons — rooted in the deep spiritual traditions of the Black church — to explore how environmental justice is inseparable from the gospel's call to love, liberation, and stewardship.

Happy Pride! We have partnered with the Audubon Society over the years and are grateful for efforts to celebrate diversity of birds, eco systems and humans.

The arrival of June marks Le***an, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. Celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, and, in the case of Audubon, bird outings. The outdoors have not always been a welcoming place for LGBTQ people and Audubon wants to help change that.

Let's Go Birding Together events are for everyone who loves birds and the outdoors. We welcome those who identify as LGBTQ, allies, families, and anyone who wants to enjoy an outdoor experience that is inclusive. Learn more at the link in comments.

The mountains are calling. So is the coast. So is the city.
This summer, young people and adults can go deeper — into creation, into community, into faith — through hands-on service learning at these remarkable places:

Christmount (Black Mountain, NC) — service projects in the Blue Ridge, evening learning sessions, and space to breathe. Week of Compassion covers $75/person for Disciples groups! www.christmount.org/summer-offerings

Blending a congregational Day of Volunteering with Creation Care
On Saturday, September 12, Disciples communities across the U.S. and Canada will gather for a Day of Volunteering as part of Disciples Mission Week 2026. Green Chalice invites you to imagine projects that hold both people and planet together.

A community garden that feeds neighbors facing food insecurity. A creek cleanup that protects local water. A tree planting that cools a neighborhood and stores carbon. A repair or weatherization day that lowers energy costs for those who need it most. Isaiah 58 reminds us that when we pour ourselves out for the hungry and the afflicted, our light rises in the darkness.

Whether you are supporting an existing ministry or planting the seed of a new one, let this be a day where loving our neighbor and loving the earth become one act of faith.

Everyone. Everywhere. Every Need.
That is the theme of Disciples Mission Week 2026, September 8-13, and Green Chalice is inviting our Summer Fellows, and all congregations, and community partners to be part of it.
This summer, our fellows are out on remarkable journeys with deep reach into their communities. Mission Week is a chance to carry that energy home, to keep engaging local congregations and neighborhoods well into the fall. The week's scripture, Isaiah 58:6-10, calls us to loose the bonds of injustice, share bread with the hungry, and satisfy the needs of the afflicted. From a creation care perspective, we know these needs are connected to the health of the land, water, and air we all share.

Join the education and awareness webinars Tuesday through Friday evenings (Sept. 8-11), take part in the Day of Volunteering on Saturday, Sept. 12, and celebrate in worship on Sunday, Sept. 13.
