Friedens United Church of Christ

Friedens United Church of Christ Friedens United Church of Christ is an open and affirming congregation. No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey you're welcome here.

We also are a growing church family that is striving to offer its very best in service to God. Frieden (translated-peace) comes from Ephesians 3:3 “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Founded in 1911 as Deutsche Evangelische Friedens Kirche, the founders shared the vision of resisting walls of sectarianism which had caused so much strife in Germany in the

19th century. The German Evangelical Synod eventually merged with the Reformed, Congregational, and Christian churches to become the United Church of Christ. Originally located at the corner of Parkway and Alabama streets, the congregation flourished and became one of the strong forces in the nurture of Christianity in the German-American community of Indianapolis. The services of worship were originally conducted in the German language. Although the church today still enjoys the German heritage, the church has grown to become an inclusive and ecumenical faith community. In the late 50’s, the decision was made to move to the present 12 acre site at 8300 South Meridian Street. The first service in the new church was held on November 15, 1964. The original building has been expanded twice to now include the sanctuary, a chapel, narthex/café area, additional classrooms, and a large Christian life and worship center. The sanctuary is equipped with a 26 rank Schlicker pipe organ, a new Estonia grand piano, handbells, handchimes, and a large Schulmerich carillon. Excellent choral music enriches worship as well. A praise and worship band, Upon This Rock has explored the contemporary music of the church. They lead the innovative Shalom service of worship. In 2005 an additional Sunday morning service was added using the ancient liturgy with sung responses. With gratitude for the past, Friedens Church continues to grow, striving to give the very best to God and to share the news that we are all loved children of God.

The construction project for the westside main entry will finally be starting in early July. It starts with the removal of the current concrete sidewalk and steps to the Narthex entry. The entrance will be completely closed until the new step-free concrete sidewalk and entry area are completed. This will also include the restoration of the seat walls that used to border this area. Signs will direct everyone to enter through the northern entrances at Hayden Hall and the kitchen, depending on the time and day.

This group of disciples will be using Hayden Hall on Saturday evenings, and the sanctuary on Sunday afternoons. Please pray for Grace Church, St. Mary's, and the Sudanese Church and their leaders and congregations. This means that the building is now home to 4 congregations! Please be mindful of these worshipping communities when planning visits to the building.
