MORNING GRACE

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
Nehemiah 1:4

When Nehemiah heard about the affliction, destruction and devastation of the people and city of Jerusalem, his heart was broken and he responded with great sorrow, fasting and prayer. Nehemiah’s response displays an often missing ingredient in people today - passion. Without a certain amount of drive, things just don’t get accomplished. Many seem to be satisfied with just letting things go and hoping they just work out. We need a revival of intentional living. We need a passion to make our marriages work, a passion in raising our children, a passion for the work we are called to, a passion in developing our churches, a passion for souls and most of all a passion for Christ. Nehemiah had a passion for the people and city of Jerusalem. He became intent on bringing repair, help and success to them once again. Lord, stir in my heart a passion for the needs that lie before me.

MORNING GRACE

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians 1:7

This opening chapter of Ephesians has been referred to as a “sweeping doxology” praising God for all of our spiritual blessings found in Christ. Specifically mentioned in this verse are “redemption” and “the forgiveness of sins.” How precious and monumental these two spiritual blessings. Redemption - Christ purchasing our freedom from the bo***ge of sin. Forgiveness - Christ eliminating the debt and guilt of all our sin. And to top it off, these two spiritual blessings are provided, not earned, “through His blood…according to the riches of His grace.” Now that should make us shout. God’s children have been set free and forgiven from the penalty of sin, not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus has done. Because of God’s grace, lavished upon us at Calvary, we enjoy these spiritual blessings and many more. Lord, thank You for these blessings given through Your grace.

MORNING GRACE

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Galatians 6:9

When I was a young child and my dad was pastoring in Ohio, he planned a watchnight service on New Year’s Eve. To close the old year out he had the congregation circle the auditorium, hold hands and people would take their turn praying around the circle. I was standing between my parents holding their hands. My mom, who was hard-of-hearing, whispered to me to squeeze her hand when it was her turn to pray. I never got that opportunity because sometime during the time of prayer I lost consciousness and fainted. The next thing I knew I was lying on the church nursery floor with my parents hovering over me trying to revive me. My dad teased me for years about how I broke up the church prayer meeting. I can attest to the fact that fainting is no fun. Galatians 6:9 reminds us of the principle of perseverance; to not faint, not give up, not quit at doing the right things. If we stay faithful doing good, serving others, maintaining faith and glorifying God we will reap the blessings of God in due time. Even though exhaustion can come from perseverance, persistence pays off and spiritual reward will come at God’s appointed time. Don’t faint Christian friends, stay faithful. Lord, help me to walk consistently, hand in hand with You.

MORNING GRACE

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17

It is not unusual to hear messages and lessons on the subject of faith. It is a common theme throughout the Bible and deserves a great emphasis in our spiritual development. Warren Weirsbe wrote, "Faith simply means obeying God's will in spite of feelings, circumstances, or consequences." But how is that faith developed? It doesn’t just magically occur. It is not self-generated. Faith is only produced in our lives by exposing ourselves to the reading and hearing of God’s Word, the Bible. As we take in the Word of God and begin to apply its truths in our daily situations of life, faith will begin to develop in our hearts and we will begin to understand that we can truly rely on God to see us through everything. Someone has said, “Hearing the Word of God is a faith-builder.” So take time to read and listen to the Bible. Faith will not come without it. Lord, help me to take time to get into your Word each day.

MORNING GRACE

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13

Memorial Day is time of reflection, remembrance and honor. It is a day to pause and honor those men and women, who in the service of our armed forces gave their lives to protect American freedom. Such sacrifice should never go unnoticed. There was an even greater sacrifice made on an old rugged cross nearly 2000 years ago. A sacrifice for every man, woman, boy and girl that would ever live. A sacrifice that paid the price of our sin, opened the door for the salvation of our soul and provided mankind an eternal home in heaven. This sacrifice, in the person of God’s Son, Jesus Christ is the greatest and most significant memorial we can ever remember. Lord, thank you for dying for me.

MORNING GRACE

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19

What a precious promise this verse has given to every child of God. A loving Heavenly Father promising to take care of every need we have; not every want, but need. We all have a need today. It may be financial, emotional, physical or even spiritual. Perhaps you are wondering how a particular bill is going to be met, or you are riding an emotional roller coaster of anxiety, maybe you are suffering the side effects of a medication, then again perhaps you are struggling the battle of sinful attacks. The needs are present and they are real. Our Father has promised to meet our needs. How? His answer, “according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” To put it simply, our Father has deep pockets. His resources are endless. They are eternal because they are rooted in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. God not only has the ability to meet every need, but also the love, compassion and wherewithal to do so. Let your faith be strong and resilient. Bring your need before God and trust Him to meet it. Lord, I’m trusting You today to meet my need.

MORNING GRACE

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Matthew 7:7

One of the key components in prayer we often fail to keep in mind is persistence. God’s desire, ability and promise to answer prayer is real, but we give up so quickly. The words, “ask,” “seek,” and “knock” mean to keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. We tend to pray about a particular need once or twice and if we see no action, we quit. We are reminded in James 5:16, “…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Fervent praying is persistent praying. My dad prayed for his brother to get saved for over 30 years. I remember the night my Uncle Ervin called my dad to tell him he had trusted Christ as his Savior. They were both glad my dad was persistent in praying. What are you praying for? What need are you bringing before the throne of God? Don’t stop. Ask and keep on asking. Don’t give up. Keep praying. God will not get tired of listening. Lord, help me to keep on praying.

MORNING GRACE

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
Mark 9:24

Why are we so surprised when God does what only God can do? We pray and trust, yet like the father in Mark 9 there is still an element of unbelief in our minds. If anything, Mark 9:24 is a reminder that in most of us there is a co-existence of belief and unbelief, yes, faith and doubt. We ask God to do something specific, thereby demonstrating our faith, but when God does what we have asked Him to do, we are startled, surprised and even shocked. I suppose it should remind us that our spiritual nature and human nature are both very much alive. The challenge is to continue to develop our faith by walking with God, praying to God and understanding daily He is, as Asaph wrote, “Thou art the God that doest wonders…” (Psalm 77:14). We can pray, take every need to God and trust Him for His wise provision. Yes, we will probably continue to be surprised when God does what only He can do. But aren’t we glad He can do it. Lord, help me today to simply believe.

MORNING GRACE

Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Matthew 6:26

Worrying is useless. Anxiety robs us of precious moments of joy, focus, energy and potential. It keeps us from enjoying the moment and looking forward to the future. It bogs us down in the past and ties us up in current difficulties. In Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount, He reminds us of the needlessness of worry. We all do it; it is a persistent trait in mankind. But in the end it of a futile effort and waste of time. Jesus taught His followers, if God takes such good care of nature, how much more does He care for the crowning glory of His creation, you and me. There is no need to be filled with anxiety, we have a Heavenly Father who has promised to clothe, feed and shelter His children. And He has already proven the faithfulness of His care in a thousand different ways. We can safely walk through our day resting in the promised provisions of our Father. Lord, help me depend on you and free me from the senseless waste of worry.

MORNING GRACE

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Acts 8:35

One of my teachers in Bible School said, “If you are unsure what to preach, just preach Jesus.” I have always thought that was good advice, because Jesus is the theme and heart of the Bible. He is the Giver of life, the Door to heaven and the Shepherd of the soul. He provides nourishment for your weakness, strength for your journey and guidance for the day. Jesus is ever near, always listening and ever ready to help. He can be trusted, depended on and is a solid foundation for our lives. You need help, turn to Jesus. You need strength, turn to Jesus. You need understanding, turn to Jesus. You need guidance, turn to Jesus. You need salvation, turn to Jesus. He will meet your deepest need, calm your struggling spirit and lift your weary soul. Yes, Jesus is still the answer. Lord, I come to you for everything I need today. You are my all in all.

MORNING GRACE

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Ephesians 4:29

The choice of our words matter. They can build understanding, influence thought, provide encouragement, strengthen relationships and yes, destroy lives. The words we speak can build up or tear down. Yes, sometimes our words have to wound and hurt in order to correct and rebuild. But this is why the Bible gives us the instruction, “speaking the truth in love” in Ephesians 4:15. The old adage, “Make sure brain is in gear before mouth is in motion” is a good one. The ultimate goal of our words is, “to the use of edifying” and to, “minister grace unto the hearers.” We should want to use our words to strengthen a heart, bring understanding to a conflict, encourage a weary soul and give praise unto God. Lord, help me today to choose my words carefully and think before I speak.
