This Sunday we spent time in John looking at the feeding of the 5,000. A few highlights:
*️⃣ We looked at the location of this memorable interaction with Jesus to give us a full picture of what the experience would have been like to be on that hillside — both as a disciple and in the crowd.
*️⃣ Using past events as context, we place this event as roughly one year prior to Jesus’ crucifixion.
*️⃣ Once again, we see Jesus ask a simple question and the disciples still not get it yet. There’s no thought to rely on Jesus.
*️⃣ We see Jesus give thanks for the loaves and fishes; a representation of His work not being independent of the Father’s.
*️⃣ We look at the 12 baskets leftover — the surplus — and how they are gathered up and stewarded. He gives abundantly more than we need.
*️⃣ We see a foreshadowing in this event in how Jesus involves the disciples. Rather than sharing physical bread with those that are hungry they would be sharing the Bread of Life with those spiritually hungry.
*️⃣ In verse 15, we see the crowd want to make Jesus king — they wanted to fulfill their will using Jesus in tumultuous political times.
*️⃣ We once again see the sign and wonder that should have pointed to Jesus as the Messiah, have the crowd focused solely on the power He possessed. We see this tension even in those who claim to follow Jesus today.
How many times do we try to impose our own will on Christ versus bending to His will?
