We are pleased to share that Fr. Andrew Summerson has been appointed Academic Director of the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies at the University of St. Michael’s College. His four‑year term began May 10, 2026.

Fr. Andrew, a tenured professor of Greek Patristics and longtime contributor to MASI’s mission, brings both scholarly depth and pastoral experience to this important role. We congratulate him and pray that the Lord blesses his leadership and service to the wider Church.

Fr. Andrew embraces this role in addition to his parochial responsibilities at St. Mary in Whiting and St. Nicholas in Munster. https://stmikes.utoronto.ca/news/fr-andrew-summerson-appointed-academic-director-of-the-sheptytsky-institute-of-eastern-christian-studies

The Vatican has announced a major new papal encyclical on artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas (https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/events/event.dir.html/content/vaticanevents/en/2026/5/25/presentazione-enciclica.html), signed on May 15, 2026 the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum (https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiii/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_l-xiii_enc_15051891_rerum-novarum.html). In this landmark document, Pope Leo places the AI revolution squarely within the Church’s century‑long defense of workers, families, and the dignity of every human person. To introduce the encyclical to the world, the Holy Father spoke at the Synod Hall on May 25, 2026 joined by Christopher Olah, co‑founder of Anthropic and one of the leading voices in global AI safety. Pope Leo has also approved the creation of a new Vatican Commission on Artificial Intelligence, ensuring that the Church not only teaches about AI but actively governs its own engagement with emerging technologies.

This timely development resonates with our Spring 2026 issue of Horizons (https://parma.org/horizonsarchives), which features two articles exploring AI through a Byzantine Catholic lens—examining both its promise and its challenges for our parishes, families, and society. We invite you to read the encyclical alongside these reflections as we continue discerning how to live faithfully in an age shaped by rapid technological change.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Mariapoch advisory board, with the support of Bishop Robert, held the nineth Miracle of Mariapoch Gala at St. Joseph parish hall, Brecksville, Ohio, on Saturday, May 16,2026. Over 120 people attended the annual fundraiser for the shrine and were treated to a prime rib dinner and a chance to win raffle baskets or bid on many silent auction items. Jonathan Loya provided entertainment with a few classic songs. Deacon Greg Loya, shrine administrator, gave an update on Project 2024: the construction of an all-purpose building, indoor chapel and museum. With the final figures not yet tallied, the Gala profit is estimated to be between $16,000-17,000.

We look forward to gathering again as Sunday Divine Liturgies at the Shrine resume on June 7, 2026, at 4:00 PM.

Please note with a slight delay encountered at the beginning of the appeal with our database migration, the annual appeal will continue through June.

Each gift you offer answers God’s call and helps shine Christ’s love into our parishes and communities, bringing real hope to the people and ministries we serve. God multiplies what we place in His hands far beyond what we could ever achieve on our own.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” — Proverbs 3:9–10

This month, ByziKids invites families to follow Christ up the mountain—quite literally. Scripture shows Jesus seeking solitude at altitude again and again, and many of the most powerful moments in salvation history unfold on mountaintops. Why does God so often choose the heights for prayer, revelation, and encounter?

This issue explores how parents can create a “mountaintop atmosphere” at home: a space where children learn to meet the Lord in quiet, in prayer, and in the steady climb of daily faith. You’ll find reflections, activities, and hands‑on pages that help your ByziFamily “raise the altitude” of your routines and grow closer to God together. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vsbPblyOEYTCMm7gcN2TiE10vDDHBoaQ/view
