168 pairs of shoes. Arranged in a heart. On the steps of our church on Good Friday.
No sign. No explanation. Just shoes.
They belong—in spirit—to the girls of Minab, Iran. 168 schoolchildren and teachers were killed on February 28th when a missile struck their school. The girls had removed their shoes at the door that morning, the way children do. They never put them back on.
Virginia, an artist and neighbor from Eckert, collected every pair. Our worship team and her supporters arranged them—one pair at a time—into a heart on the east steps of Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church.
Following our Seven Stations of the Cross service, we walked outside and stood in silence among those shoes. We held candles. We prayed—not for one government over another, not for any political outcome. We prayed for the mothers of Minab. We prayed for children everywhere who sit down at school desks and deserve to come home.
Grief does not require a shared language or a shared border. It only requires the willingness to stop and bear witness.
We will not scroll past them.
