Pope Leo XIV put Father Edward Joseph Flanagan a step closer to possible sainthood Monday as he proclaimed the “heroic virtues” of the founder of Boys Town, a Nebraska home for at-risk youths that gained national renown and inspired an Oscar-winning biopic performance. With Leo’s proclamation, the priest commonly known as “Father Flanagan” is now officially declared “venerable.” Later steps on a possible path of sainthood would include beatification and ultimately canonization.

The Holy See has officially informed Bishop Louis Tylka of the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, that the cause for the Venerable Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen can proceed to beatification, according to an announcement from the diocese.

“The next step in the process is the celebration of the beatification, in which Fulton Sheen would be declared Blessed,” Tylka said. “Archbishop Fulton Sheen was one of the greatest voices of evangelization in the Church and the world in the 20th century. I have long admired his lifelong commitment to serve the Church as a priest, rooted in his deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Eucharist.”

“As he journeyed through the different stages of his life, his ability to share the Gospel and truly relate to people drew countless souls into an encounter with Jesus — one that transformed not only his life, but more importantly, the lives of those he touched.”

This iconic photograph captures the moment between a Catholic priest and a dying soldier who was wounded by a sniper shot during the civil unrest in Venezuela in 1962.

The priest had braved the streets amid sniper fire to offer last rites to the dying young soldier. The soldier can be seen pulling himself up by clinging to the priest’s cassock.

The photographer, Hector Randon Lovera, took the shot while lying flat to avoid getting shot himself. Rondon took the photo of the government soldier crawling his way up Navy chaplain Luis Padilla’s robe as Padilla looks in the direction of the rebel sniper fire.
