On October 31, 1959 after realizing the need of a Baptist Church in the Gann’s Crossroads Community and after much prayer, Author and Ruth Herron, Deaun and Dorothy Rogers, and James and Rosie Brewer met at the home of James Brewer to organize Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. After adopting the church covenant and articles of faith of the Sand Mountain Association, the church was organized and C
laude Parker served as the first pastor. Services were started in the Smith’s Chapel Community Building. The first deacons were ordained on November 29, 1959. They were James Brewer, Jack Moses, and Ralph Vaughn. Carl Brewer served as the first Sunday school director. One year later 81 members were enrolled in Sunday school, 64 in Training Union with 54 members attending at that time. Deaun Rogers donated land for a new church. They tore down a school house in Fyffe, AL for materials to build and borrowed $7500 from the Home Missions Board to finish and construction began in 1961. In 1976 four new Sunday school rooms and a fellowship hall were added on. In 1990 they built an activity building behind the church. God has blessed us through the years and several members and pastors have passed through and left a special mark on our church. We appreciate all of them. In October 2008, Jody Marston was voted in as Pastor of the church. Jody was saved when he was six years old and announced his call to preach in February 1993. In December 2003, he was called to pastor his first church at Popular Springs Baptist Church. Jody has been married to his wife Emily for 27 years. They have three grown children and three grand children. Jody was raised at Calvary Baptist Church and it is a privilege to have him serve as our Pastor.
