Amen to that! 🙏🏻
Just before receiving the Eucharist, the Priest says, “The Body of Christ.” The communicant responds with a single word: Amen. It sounds small, almost automatic. But in the Catholic faith, this is one of the most serious words you will ever speak.
“Amen” does not mean “okay” or “thank you.” It means “I believe.” When you say Amen, you are publicly declaring that what you are about to receive is not bread, not a symbol, not a reminder, but Jesus Christ Himself: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. With that one word, you are professing the Church’s faith in the Real Presence.
But the danger lies here: Amen is not only a statement of belief; it is a statement of commitment. By saying Amen, you are also saying, “I accept everything this Eucharist demands of me.” You are agreeing to be united to Christ, to live as His disciple, to turn away from sin, and to let your life match what you receive. The Church does not force Communion on anyone, you step forward freely, and your Amen seals the choice.
This is why the Church warns against receiving Communion without proper disposition. To say Amen while rejecting Christ’s teaching, while clinging deliberately to grave sin, or while denying His presence is to let your lips say what your life refuses to live. Saint Paul speaks sharply about this: we must discern the Body, because this is no ordinary food.
The beauty of Amen is that it is both faith and surrender. In one word, you say, “Yes, Lord. I believe. I receive. I am willing to be changed.” That is why the Church pauses there. Heaven listens.
Now you know.
The next time you say Amen, will it be a habit, or a wholehearted confession of faith that your life is ready to carry?
