What does the Bible say about the church?
The Bible presents the church through multiple interconnected images that reveal its nature, purpose, and relationship to Christ.
The Church as Christ’s Body
The church functions as Christ’s body, with Jesus as its head (Eph 1:22–23), establishing an organic unity between Christ and believers. This body comprises many members unified through one Spirit—Jews and Gentiles, bond and free—all baptized into a single body (1 Cor 12:12–27). Rather than uniformity, God has arranged the body to prevent division, ensuring members care for one another (1 Cor 12:12–27), with suffering and honor shared collectively among all parts (1 Cor 12:12–27). Christ distributes various roles—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—to equip believers for ministry and build up the body (Eph 4:11–16).
The Church’s Identity and Purpose
Christ declared he would build his church, promising that the gates of hell would not overcome it (Matt 16:18). As the head of the church, Christ holds preeminence in all things (Col 1:18). Believers form a chosen generation and royal priesthood, called to display God’s praises (1 Pet 2:9–10). The church serves as “the house of God” and “the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Tim 3:15).
Community Life and Witness
The early church devoted itself to apostolic teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer—sharing possessions, eating together with gladness, and praising God (Acts 2:42–47). Jesus commanded believers to love one another as he loved them, identifying his disciples by this love (John 13:34–35). The church is called to encourage one another toward love and good works, not forsaking corporate gathering (Heb 10:24–25).
Spiritual Reality
Believers are built together as a holy temple in the Lord, with Christ as the chief cornerstone. The church collectively functions as God’s temple, indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 3:16–17). Christ loved the church and gave himself for it, sanctifying and cleansing it to present a glorious, holy, and blameless bride (Eph 5:25–27).
Mission and Reconciliation
Jesus commissioned the church to teach all nations, baptizing them and instructing them in his commands (Matt 28:18–20). God entrusted the church with the ministry of reconciliation, making believers ambassadors for Christ who plead with others to be reconciled to God (2 Cor 5:18–20).
