The idea that a person can be spiritual or worship God without organized religion is popular in our day. Some may wonder, “Why do we need a church?”

While developing a relationship with God is personal and can certainly progress independent of church participation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints exists to teach the fulness of His doctrine and officiate with His priesthood authority to perform the ordinances necessary to enter the kingdom of God with our loved ones forever.

In other words, church attendance and participation help us focus on our eternal priorities. In addition, those who forgo church attendance and rely only on individual spirituality forfeit many opportunities to make sacred covenants with God, including in holy temples, or qualify to perpetuate their family for eternity.

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is “the head of the church” (Ephesians 5:23) and that He organized it “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). We affirm the scriptural origin and need for a church directed by and with the authority of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

We need the Church because the Savior taught that “whosoever belongeth to my church need not fear, for such shall inherit the kingdom of heaven” (Doctrine and Covenants 10:55). May we all remain steadfast in our commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ’s Church as we seek eternal life, the greatest of all the gifts of God.

Marriage and family are central in God's plan for our eternal happiness. God has ordained that marriage is between a man and a woman, both sharing the sacred responsibility to be loyal, faithful, and equal partners in this cherished union. It is a sacred privilege and responsibility for parents to care for the children they are able to bear or adopt, teaching and living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our families are most likely to be happy when we live by the teachings of Jesus Christ. Still, all families have challenges. As we seek God’s support and keep His commandments, such challenges can help us grow in love and service, help us learn to repent and forgive. As we are faithful, God promises us the blessings of loving families, whether in this life or in the life to come. Why is family important to you?

“I am soon approaching my 100th birthday. One of the places where the Savior used the number 100 in the scriptures was the parable of the lost sheep. Though 99 of his flock were safely by his side, the shepherd went in search of the 1 who was lost.

“At age 99, I have no need of physical gifts. But one spiritual offering that would brighten my life is for each of us to reach out to ‘the one’ in our lives who may be feeling lost or alone.

“Over the coming months I invite you to consider prayerfully: who do you know who may be discouraged? Who might you need to reconcile with or ask for forgiveness? Has one name been on your mind lately, though you haven’t quite known why? As you bring these questions to the Lord, He will inspire you to know how you can reach out and lift one who needs help.

“What a beautiful example the Savior has shown us—that through each of us ministering to just one within our reach, we can spread the love of Jesus Christ throughout the world.”

–President Russell M. Nelson
