What does 'freedom' signify to you? June 19th, 1865, marked more than a mere announcement; it was a pivotal day of liberation for our people. For centuries, our people endured enslavement and inhumane living conditions. Despite President Abraham Lincoln's abolition of slavery, it took two additional years for certain regions of the country to acknowledge this decree.
So, what does 'freedom' mean to me? It extends beyond a mere declaration; it is an ideal that requires diligent pursuit every day. We must not simply claim this nation as the 'land of the free' without ensuring that the promised freedoms are upheld and accessible to all.
True freedom will remain elusive until liberty and justice are universally applied. We will not achieve true freedom until equal opportunities are afforded to all communities, regardless of socioeconomic status. True freedom will not be realized until we recognize that our differences should foster growth, and not division. We will not be free until we collectively stand against injustice, wherever it may occur.
The struggle for freedom is ongoing. Merely proclaiming our freedom without dismantling oppressive systems is insufficient. It is our responsibility to utilize our freedom to empower others and safeguard these same freedoms for future generations.
