Epiphany Episcopal Church, Hurst, Texas We are an outreach minded church where all people truly are welcome. http://www.ssechurst.org/

St Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Hurst, Texas joyfully welcomes and affirms all as beloved children of God. We embrace people of all sexual orientations, gender expressions, socioeconomic statuses, family types, and ethnicities, and invite them to join us at the Lord’s Table. We believe full and equal participation in the life of our church is open to all people, especially those who have known th

e pain of exclusion and discrimination by the church and society. Our life together centers on God’s radical hospitality and this is reflected in the ways in which we serve each other and the communities around us.

Our murals are complete and totally transformed the exterior of our new church home. Kim Oswald designed each stained glass window, sketched them onto the wall then transformed them into giant paint by number panels so everyone in the congregation could participate in the painting no matter their artistic talent. Kim and Greg Oswald logged so many hours painting this week and we are so deeply thankful.

O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with your servants who seek through art to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; and grant to them even now glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

What a gift it was celebrating our LGBTQIA+ friends last night! Thank you, Rev. Kevin Johnson, for preaching such important words of hope and love. 🌈

God of Boundless love, you require each of us to love justice. May we follow Christ's example to see, name, and care for all whom we encounter. May your love and grace fill our words and actions, turning us away from the sins of homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and racism, to live for you and serve our neighbor. Soften our hearts and expand our awareness today to share in the spirit of the Reign of God, making the church a place where community is built to experience your grace. In your name, we pray, Amen.

An Affirming PRIDE Reading List

Dear friends,

I read a lot of books. The primary reason I read so much is that books offer me the best way to learn about cultures and ways of life different from my own. I grew up in a very specific, privileged way, and there is so much about the world and all its people that I don’t know. So I read about them and learn and expand my understanding, which then makes it a whole lot more difficult to judge.

As we begin Pride Month, I thought I would share a list of books and articles to help our church better understand what it means to be q***r and specifically q***r in the church. I initially put this list together a few years ago, but made some edits to share newer titles with you today. Do you have other suggestions? Let me know and I’ll add them. Do you have experiences of being q***r in the church that you’d like to share? Let me know so we can find time to talk.
🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

Books
Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians by Austen Hartke - Offers an exploration of transgender inclusion and faith from a Biblical perspective and includes the voices and perspectives of a variety of different transgender people.

Unclobber: Rethinking our misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality by Colby Martin - Oriented from and towards an evangelical/exvangelical perspective, and provides a really helpful entry-point for discussions around the “clobber passages.”

God Gets Everything God Wants by Katie Hays - Katie is the pastor of Galileo Church in Fort Worth and this book describes what she calls “the theological rehabilitation” they are doing at Galileo. Truthfully, I recommend all of Katie’s books: https://www.katiehays.net/books

Outlove: A Q***r Christian Survival Story by Julie Rodgers - A memoir from a Dallas native about surviving and recovering the evangelical "ex-gay" movement and conversion therapy. Happy Ending: she marries her wife and possesses a radical self-acceptance.

We Have Always Been Here: A Q***r Muslim Memoir by Samra Habib - a memoir of coming of age and growing up q***r and Muslim in Pakistan and Canada.

Rainbow Theology: Bridging Race, Sexuality, and Spirit by the Rev. Dr. Patrick Cheng - to my knowledge, this was the first book in the Episcopal Church to really look at the intersections of race and q***r sexuality across multiple ethnic and cultural groups.

Choosing Love: What LGBTQ+ Can Teach Us All About Relationships, Inclusion, and Justice by Dawne Moon and Theresa W. Tobin - this book brings together LGBTQIA+ conservative Christians; they aren’t always mutually exclusive.

What am I missing? I also have novels, picture books, and middle grade suggestions as well. Just email me or comment below and I’ll happily share!

Faithfully,
Allison+

Epiphany Episcopal Church was filled with the Holy Spirit on Pentecost! We welcomed new members during worship and celebrated them during coffee hour. We reminded them that Epiphany needs their voices and their wisdom.
We need the particular way the Spirit moves through them because our church is incomplete without the gifts within them. Welcome to our family.

It's Mental Health Awareness Month and Epiphany has a workshop that will surely benefit you and those you love.

The May Mental Health Initiative Workshop features Dr. Kaity Brock, Ph.D., LPC, Licensed Psychologist. Dr. Brock will explore facets of perfectionism and people-pleasing—achievement that is wrapped up in self-worth. She will discuss how being over-scheduled impacts your mental well-being and relationships. This workshop will propose ways to set boundaries, make time for emotions, and say “no” to people without feeling guilty.

Join us on Thursday, May 28th at 7:00 PM and invite your friends!

What happened to Bishop Deon Johnson's family was not supposed to happen. A routine green card appointment in Mexico turned into a yearlong separation. His husband, who came to the United States as a young child and had never known another home, was told he could not return. For an entire year, two children grew up without one of their parents present. A Quinceañera was canceled. Ordinary moments that families take for granted simply vanished.

Bishop Johnson did not withdraw. He continued leading the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri while quietly navigating one of the most painful experiences of his life. When his husband finally returned home on Valentine's Day of last year, the bishop chose to speak. Not only about his family, but about the thousands of people across this diocese and this country who face the same uncertainty without the platform to say so.

This week, St. Louis Public Radio sat down with Bishop Johnson for a candid and moving conversation about faith, family, fear, and what it means to live with the constant shadow of a system that can upend a life without warning. It is a story that belongs to all of us.
