🕊️ In Memoriam — Fr. Laurence Wrenn

It is with sadness that we share the passing of Fr. Laurence Wrenn, the first pastor of Ascension Catholic Church, who died peacefully on August 31, 2026, in Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland.

Fr. Wrenn holds a special place in the history of Ascension. In 1979, while serving as Associate Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in St. Albans, Bishop Joseph H. Hodges entrusted him with the additional responsibility of establishing a Catholic mission in Hurricane.

As the Catholic community in the Teays Valley continued to grow, that mission became Ascension Catholic Church. On September 14, 1980, the Hurricane mission was officially elevated to a parish, and Fr. Wrenn became Ascension’s first pastor. On May 28, 1981, the Feast of the Ascension, the first Mass was celebrated at Ascension Parish.

The parish community we know today grew from those early beginnings, and we remain grateful for Fr. Wrenn’s faith, service, and dedication in helping establish a Catholic presence in Hurricane. His ministry will forever be an important part of the history of Ascension Catholic Church.

Please join us in praying for the repose of his soul and for his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his priestly ministry.

Father Shaji Throws the First Pitch!
Father Shaji had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Dirty Birds’ game - Fifth Annual Parish Appreciation Baseball Game on Friday, August 14. He stepped up to the mound and delivered an impressive first pitch that could have been a strike! It was a wonderful evening celebrating our local faith communities while enjoying America’s favorite pastime.

Our rescheduled VBS Water Day is this Sunday, August 23rd from 4:30–6:00 PM!

We’re looking forward to an evening of water fun, friends, food, and fellowship!

✨ WE NEED YOU! ✨

Ascension is looking for parishioners who feel called to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

Training will be held Thursday, August 20 at 6:30 PM.

This is a beautiful and meaningful way to serve our parish family during Mass. All three weekend Masses are in need of additional ministers, with a special need at the Saturday 5:00 PM Mass.

If you’ve ever considered becoming a Eucharistic Minister, now is a great time to get involved! No experience is necessary — we’ll provide the training you need.

Ascension Parish Fair & Picnic 8/9/26

What a Wonderful Day!
Our first Annual Ascension Fair & Picnic was a wonderful success! Thank you to everyone who came out, volunteered, and helped make the day so much fun.
A special thank you to the Women’s Club for donating the desserts, the Knights of Columbus for donating the hamburgers and hot dogs, terry Williams for grilling, Amanda and Ryan Donovan for helping whenever and wherever needed, Courtney and DANIEL, FOR making all the games, Father Shaji for being a great sport and getting dunked countless times, And especially Theresa Thompson for coordinating the entire event- It truly would not have happened without her.

We can’t wait for The fair and picnic in 2027!

We joyfully congratulate Bryce & Logan Watts, who celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony here at Ascension Saturday, August 8, 2026.
Their journey of faith has been a special one for our parish family. After participating in OCIA, Logan & Bryce received the Sacraments of Initiation and were welcomed into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil this year.
Now, just a few months later, they have celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and begin their life together as husband and wife.
May God bless Logan and Bryce with a lifetime of love, faith, and happiness as they continue their journey together!
