THE RIGHT REVEREND MITRED'S OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran
The Right Reverend Mitred Archpriest Benedict fell peacefully asleep in the Lord on Saturday, November 7, 2020. He reposed at home surrounded by his family.

He was born William Howard Tallant in Jasper, Alabama on December 29, 1926, the first-born child of William Louis and Velvie Greene Tallant. He spent his childhood there until he joined the United States Navy at age 18, and later, he joined the Alabama National Guard. He attended Birmingham Southern College on the GI Bill.

Father Benedict loved the Lord, Our God, with his whole heart. He loved the Holy Orthodox Church and St. Nicholas Parish, where he served as Rector for over 55 years. He was ordained to the Priesthood at St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York City on the 22nd of May, 1962 by Bishop Dosifei, Patriarchal Exarch of North and South America. During his tenure as Rector, he received many awards for his service, some of which include: The promotion to the rank of Archpriest in 1967, the right to wear the Nebedrenik in 1968, the komilavka in 1972, the Gold Cross in 1973, The Palitza in 1982, the Jeweled Cross was presented to him by Patriarch Alexi in Moscow in 1984, the Order of St. Sergei; 1st , 2nd, and 3rd class, the Order of St Daniel of Moscow in 2004, and Patriarch Kyrill awarded the Mitre which was presented to him by Bishop Justinian on the 8th of December, 2013.

He retired from his secular job as a clerk in the Tour Superintendent’s Office of the United States Postal Service at Birmingham in 1986.

Fr. Benedict also loved his family and considered himself the protector of “his girls”. He and the beautiful Jewel Boswell, whom we know as Matushka Monica, were married on April 16, 1949. The Lord blessed them with five daughters and by default, 5 sons: Dorothy, now married to William McCoy, Melissa, now married to Richard Young, Melanie, now married to Larry Wheeler, Janelle, now married to Fr. Paul Davis, and Rhonda, now married to Paul McCracken. They also have been blessed with the legacy of 11 grandchildren: Douglas, Jason, William, Kristie, Amanda, Nicole, Mary, Anastasia, Nicholas, Brandon, and Wendi. They are great-grandparents to 24 children and great-great-grandparents to 3. Father Benedict often spoke of how proud he was of all the children and their accomplishments and generously shared stories and photos with any captive audience. Father is also survived by his sister, Patricia, having been preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph and Bobby, as well as his parents. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Fr. Benedict was an avid historian. He spoke, in addition to English, fluent German and studied Church Slavonic, Russian, and Spanish. He loved to study European, Russian, Aviation, and especially Southern history. The history of the South was particularly dear to his heart. He became a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Commander of Camp Mortimer Jordan Camp #84. He enjoyed re-enacting battles and events of the War Between the States as a camp surgeon and later Surgeon General for the State of Alabama Re-enactors.

He was a voracious reader and critical thinker who never subscribed to the popular narrative on any subject, but did his own extensive research. He owned an impressive library which included books on a wide variety of topics.

Father was also a lover of music of many genres and music from many different countries. Classical, traditional, Southern, German, and music from the 1940’s were his favorites. He had an extensive collection which he shared with anyone who showed an interest.

Father had an interest in all kinds of different things and loved to experience all that life had to offer. He learned to box at an early age and he started taking TaekWonDo classes at age 55 and earned a first-degree black belt.

He was an artist and expressed himself through a variety of mediums, including watercolors, oil paintings, lettering, and building of model aircraft. He was a Charter Member and co-organizer of the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, which will be the recipient of many of his collection of over 500 models.

Father is going to be greatly missed by his family, his parish, and his friends. The world was certainly a better place for his having lived here over 93 years and we are thankful for every one of those years.

Dear Parishioners,

God's blessings be with you and your family as we ready ourselves to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord on Tuesday.

The following is a list of this weeks schedule:

Tuesday, January 7th - Nativity Divine Liturgy (Western rite)11:00 am
Saturday, January 11th - Vigil for Sunday within the Octave of Nativity (Western rite) 5 pm
Sunday, January 12th - Sunday within the Octave of Nativity (Eastern rite) 11:00 am.

I want to also encourage you all to make every effort to come together for our weekly Liturgies. We are small in number, but when we are all together we are encouraged and strengthened in God's grace by each others presence. Also, consider availing yourself of Confession now and again. It is good for the soul...

I look forward to seeing many of you this coming week. And those who are unable to attend are in my daily prayers.

In Christ,

Fr. Richard

Christ be with you,

On Saturday, January 4th, the service of Great Vespers will be celebrated at St. Xenia's chapel at 5:00 PM.

On Sunday, January 5th, the Divine liturgy of St. John Chrysostom will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. with trapeza following.

During Trapeza, it would be good to have a discussion on what might be done toward fund raising ideas and approaches for the mission, and how best to implement such a project.

i look forward to seeing you all there.

In Christ,
Fr. Michael

Dear Parishioners,

After last weeks meeting following Sunday Divine Liturgy, the following was decided regarding times of our weekly Liturgy schedule. Here are our Liturgy times for this week and going forward:

Tomorrow: 5:00 pm Saturday Vespers & Confessions
Sunday: 10:30 am Sunday Divine Liturgy

Holy Days at 7 pm. (This will be the time for the coming Nativity Liturgy - Jan. 7th

It is hoped that these times will afford for most of our parishioners to attend as often as possible. I especially am thinking of high Holy Days in which most of you have to work and can not attend a morning or afternoon liturgy. Hopefully, more can come after work at 7 pm on these special occasions.

I encourage you to consider availing yourselves of Confession on Saturday evenings before Sunday. This is a long-held tradition within Orthodoxy so as to prepare for the reception of Our Lord, in the Holy Eucharist on Sunday.

God's blessings,

Fr. Richard

12/21/2019

Dear Parishioners,

Tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 21st) we will begin having Saturday Vespers followed by Confessions beginning at 5 pm.
On Sunday (December 22nd) 2nd Sunday of Advent, Divine Liturgy at 3 pm.
I would greatly appreciate your support as we try to win souls to the Orthodox faith and to the true Church of Jesus Christ and the Apostles.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible this weekend. And please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

God bless,

Fr. Richard+

To all the good people of St. Xenia's,

I pray that you all had a very nice and peaceful thanksgiving. Many of you with your family, but hopefully everyone with someone they care for.

For most of the secular world, the Christmas season has begun in earnest. For us Orthodox, Advent does not begin until Sunday the 15th of December.

Today (Nov. 28th) we begin the Nativity Fast. During this fast we are to abstain from meat and dairy products. Besides this, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the consumption of fish, oil and wine is to abstained from. On the other weekdays - Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays: food with vegetable oil is allowed. During the Nativity Fast, it is permitted to eat fish on Saturdays, Sundays and on Great Feast Days (example - On the Presentation of the Mother of God, patron saints' days, and saint's days that are celebrated with a polyeleos service if these feasts fall on Tuesdays or Thursdays. If they fall on Wednesdays or Fridays, only wine and oil are allowed. And finally, during the week preceding Christmas Eve that becomes stricter with the abstention from fish even on Saturdays and Sundays.

With all the above said about the Nativity Fast, we must search our hearts for what God is calling you to do. If you have a medical condition (such as diabetes) you are dispensed from the strict rules of the fast. Other too, may find it impractical because of their employment situation. If this be the case, then find some other act that you can perform that helps you to draw closer to God. Growing spiritually is the goal and a fast done just because it is the direction of the Church, but devoid of personal piety is for naught.

Again I would like to remind everyone that we have a Saturday 3 pm Evening Prayer and Divine Liturgy in anticipation of the following Sunday. The Liturgy uses the Orthodox Western Rite Liturgy. If you have not ever been a part of a WR Liturgy you may be interested in participating. The mysteries are the same and they are blessed by our blessed Metropolitan Hilarion. Also, Wednesday, December 4th is the Feast day of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Divine Liturgy will be at 3 pm.

I look forward to meeting each one of you in time. And please know that you have a ROCOR priest who lives in Huntsville now. Do not hesitate to call when in need of a priest.

May God abundantly bless you...

Christ is in our midst...

Greetings to all the good people of St. Xenia's. I am the new priest that lives in Huntsville with my wife, Mtk. Alexandra. We are so happy to be placed here so that you all have access to a priest throughout the week. I assure you that Fr. Michael is and will remain the Priest-In-Charge for some time to come. So don't worry. The only difference at St. Xenia's is now there are two priests serving the mission.

Today we had our first Western Rite liturgy at St. Xenia's Chapel at 10 am. We were blessed to have Nick Nelson, Mtk. Alexandra, and myself present to celebrate the Eucharist together. I hope to meet all of you in time, as I'm sure I will..

This coming Wednesday is the Feast of all Old Testament Prophets. We will have Divine Liturgy at 12 noon on this day.

Beginning next Saturday, we will begin having Vespers and Divine Liturgy at 3 pm. Fr. Michael and I thought hat this might allow for shopping and other errands to be done on Saturday morning and early afternoon. Then services at 3 pm during the Winter months will give you the opportunity to receive the sacred mysteries and still get home before dark.

In the Summer we may move the time closer to 5 pm because of the longer days.

Please keep my cell phone: (502) 229-1044 handy in case you have an emergency and need a priest. I am here to serve whenever you need me.

God bless each of you always,

Fr. Richard
