"Building Bonds Over Breakfast: Today, The Focus on the Future Mentorship Program gathered for breakfast for a motivational start to the weekend. These young men gathered at Jacks, sharing stories, reflecting on their week, and discussing the importance of fostering deep connections with their peers. Laughter filled the air as they supported and uplift one another, provided advice for how to manage conflict, and discussed how life had been treating them. These breakfast gatherings are symbolic of when older men get together for breakfast on Saturday mornings. Many of the men who was in the restaurant gave them hi fives, stated how proud they were to see young men get together, and they all just smiled! Today has started great!!!

These are the days that develop leaders. Friday night we hit Insanity Skate Park for a guys night out. In a world that provides many challenges it is imperative that young men develop camaraderie with their peers and have some safe fun!

Saturday the Focus on the Future Mentorship Program served meals at the Manna House. I have challenged them to utilize their talents and skills to help others in community. Drop some encouragement for them in the chat!

Modern society often underestimates the value of presence, especially for young people. These two young men have been staples in the Focus on the Future Mentorship Program, not just showing up but showing up equipped with knowledge, a plan in hand and with intent to impact the lives of the mentees...

It can be difficult juggling life, while also making yourself available to others. These young men have shown their resolve to be present wherever the need arises. This is their chosen life plan. This is the heart and life of a social worker.

One of the most valuable assets the interns brought to the Focus on the Future Mentorship Program was their ingenuity and creativity.

Each month, the interns were challenged with facilitating innovative conversations around social skills, managing peer groups, and engaging with the community. Drawing upon their experience and the knowledge gained from their studies, they engaged the mentees both physically and mentally with enthusiasm and rigor.

One of the things that we teach our mentees in the focus on the future mentorship program is affective social skills. We instill the value of communicating and interacting with their peers in ways that build them up emotionally physically and mentally.

Join the AAMU Department of Social Work on August 14th for FOCUS CAMP.
This FREE one day “Virtual” experience is designed to introduce middle and high school-aged young men to the Family & Child Welfare profession, and acquaint future students with the Social Work Program at Alabama A&M University. Attendees will take a virtual tour of the campus, hear from leaders in the profession and will end with a Virtual Game Night!
