The Gospel says: “In Christ, God has already accepted you. Now go love your neighbor.”

Because Jesus has moved toward us in mercy, we are free to move toward our neighbors in mercy.

What does it actually look like to be a good neighbor?

1) Practice holy curiosity.
-> Set aside assumptions. Ask questions, and really listen. Seek to learn their story. This doesn't mean abandoning our convictions; it means remembering that a person is always more than a category or label.

2) Practice the ministry of presence.
-> You don't always have to fix the problem or provide an answer. Sometimes, just being present for those in need is the most precious gift you could give.

3) Move towards real needs.
-> Give time, share resources, open your home, offer a ride, make a meal. Neighbor-love becomes visible when mercy takes on flesh.

4) Practice wise boundaries.
-> You cannot help everyone. Jesus isn’t asking you to carry responsibilities He hasn’t given you. Instead, how can you faithfully be a good neighbor to the person God has placed in front of you?

It's easy to give into the same temptations the religious people in the Parable of the Good Samaritan fell into: narrowing our definition of "neighbor" so we aren't obligated to love those we don't want to.

What categories do we create to justify withholding our love from people who are different, difficult, or inconvenient?

Every dimension of us reflects the divine imprint: soul and body, faculties and powers, capacities and relationships... including the diversity within humanity. Like an artist, God fashioned diverse human beings to live in deep, edifying horizontal connection with one another.

When we look across the aisle or across the room, we are not looking at cultural competitors or strangers. We are looking at fellow image-bearers who carry sacred worth and dignity. This foundational view radically reshapes how we speak to, listen to, and honor one another across ethnic and generational lines.

C. S. Lewis once observed this bitter paradox in the human heart:
It is easier to be enthusiastic about Humanity with a capital “H” than it is to love individual men & women, especially those who are uninteresting, irritating, depraved, or otherwise unattractive. Loving everybody in general may be an excuse for loving nobody in particular.

To really love people in all of their complications and diversity, you have to get close.

If we are to love one another in all of our God-given diversity, that means we have to press in to love the people around us who aren't easy to love, too. Not just the ones that look and sound the same as we do.

Cast all those burdens upon Him, because He cares for you. You do not have to repair your broken connection through your own self-effort. Bring your narcissistic thoughts, bring your self-loathing, bring your toxic shame and your heavy pride, and lay them at the foot of the cross.
