None of the power and prosperity we chase after will follow us into the grave. If our hope is in this life alone, then we have ample reason for anxiety. But here's the thing: God is really the only one whom we must fear. Nothing in this life can ultimately shake us if we are His. We can trust Him and depend on Him as our provider, sustainer, and hope!

If you're a Christian, then enjoying God first helps put His gifts into their proper place: under Him, not above Him. This isn't easy, because life under the sun doesn’t function the way God created it to! But through the example of Jesus and the help of the Holy Spirit, not only can we learn contentment, but also: how to celebrate what is good, lament what is evil, stand for justice, and speak truth to power.

As Christians, we should enjoy our country in moderation, not in excessiveness. If we are going to celebrate, let's celebrate in truth - not holding up a whitewashed history! Can we humbly call out America's sins? Can we lament over the oppression and injustice that our country is guilty of in the past AND present?

Can we be honest about the evil committed not just by "the other side" but by our own ancestors and our own party?
