Today, June 7, in Polish history: 1982, safe inside the Vatican behind closed doors, for the first time in history a pope and a president met alone. For 50 minutes Ronald Reagan and John Paul II spoke in private. To this day no one knows about what. No agenda existed, no recording was made, no notes taken.

One man the leader of the free world, commanding the most powerful military and shepherding the most vibrant economy on the planet. The other the spiritual beacon of a billion-plus Catholics, millions of whom had lived for decades in eastern Europe under the harsh yoke of communism.

Today, on 4 June, Poland's Roman Catholic Church observes the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ with processions of the faithful winding through streets nationwide in one of the liturgical calendar's most visible public celebrations.

The feast, commonly known as Corpus Christi (Święto Bożego Ciała), centers on the Eucharist and falls on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. Processions accompanying the observance date to 13th-century Cologne, and the tradition of stopping at four altars representing the four Gospels and the four corners of the world was established in 15th-century Germany and continues today. In Poland, Corpus Christi processions began appearing in the early 14th century, first in Płock and Wrocław, and rapidly gained significance.
