Well, we did it! Everyone is now safely home. Sunday was closing worship which was led by Bishop Eaton. We did lots of singing and were amazed by the logistics of giving communion to over 30,000 people. It was pretty impressive. We took the afternoon to visit the Houston Water Wall and then had a nice lunch complete with desert (thanks to Sherry Owens who spoiled us). We then got to the airport and found out why we had been unable to get seat selections....they were overbooked! That was quite frustrating, but we did ultimately get on. We arrived at BWI a little after midnight. Walter and Amare Shipley Merz picked us up with my truck and their car and we headed back to Calvert (thanks!). I was amazed the kids didn’t sleep at all on the drive home. Instead, they reminisced about their adventures. It’s safe to say they all had a very rewarding experience. Thanks to everyone that helped make it happen!! Matt and I got home about 2am and are looking for the number of the truck that hit us. Matthew Hickin is very hoarse from all the concerts/screaming and I’m pretty sure he set the record for most new snapchat contacts. Eat your heart out Austin Owens!! Next up: Minneapolis 2021!!

Last night we had amazing front row seats to hear some amazing stories:

We heard from a pastor who expressed his dismay with our country’s inability to overcome issues of xenophobia, immigration, homophobia, and racism. He tied all of them back to love and how easy they should all be to overcome.

We heard from a mom and heard her story of raising a transgender child. Then we met her now 11 year old daughter who was an amazing speaker at such a young age. She spoke of her difficulties in society and how she was called upon by senators and congessmen for guidance.

We heard from a young man in his mid 20’s who had overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

We heard from a young woman who set up a network of food pantries to feed the poor and how our society throws away 40% of the food we have and how she works to transition that food tonthe poor. She also told us of her struggles with her sexuality and how she was r***d because of it. Hers was a very powerful story that touched our kids.

And finally we heard from a black man that spoke of his difficulties with racism and other life challenges and the irony of now being invited to speak to 30,000 white people (he was not wrong and got thunderous applause).

It was a long day and we all slept well after our closing recap of the day’s events.

Today is Synod Day. We meet with the other congregations in our Synod. Networking has begun!

Last night at the Gathering we heard from a 15 year old with a terminal illness called Mitacondria. She fought God’s path for her until she heard Him call her to set up a support group. She now runs an online support group with 15,000 members internationally.

We heard from a man who in his teens cut himself to overcome the pains of life. He was told by other churches he was going to hell. Lutherans then explained the concept of Grace to him. He’s now getting ne 10 years without cutting.

Then we heard from a Pastor that felt she was not worthy yet has a vibrant following and has written an NY best seller about her sordid past and how she overvame through the Grace of God. Our kids had a great time singing and dancing with some great bands! We slept well last night!

Uh oh! Floor seats! Had to work for these seats!! 😜
