FYI Black History Month Banner Submissions go live online Monday morning!! Paper applications are also available. Please read below!
The City of Huntington will launch the public application period for the 2024 Black History Month banner program on Monday, April 24, 2023.
The 2024 downtown street banner program will honor 90 Black individuals who have made significant contributions to the Fairfield community, the City of Huntington or at the state and national levels.
The banners will be installed in the downtown central business district on 3rd and 4th avenues for Black History Month in February 2024.
As with this year’s Black History Month banner program, all 2024 banner honorees also will be recognized with their biography and photo at www.huntingtonblackhistory.com.
“The City of Huntington launched this banner program as a step toward defining Black History Month as a quintessential gift to the rest of the world through the life and experience of Huntington’s native son, Dr. Carter G. Woodson,” Mayor Steve Williams said. “Without the contributions of Dr. Woodson and all of the other individuals who have been or will be honored through this program, Huntington would not be what it is today – a quilt of diversity and cultures that is accepting and loving of all people.”
The deadline for 2024 submissions will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2023. Beginning at approximately 9 a.m. Monday, April 24, applicants will be able to submit applications online at www.cityofhuntington.com. Applications also will be available at and can be submitted to the Mayor’s Office at City Hall, 800 5th Ave., or at the A.D. Lewis Community Center, 1450 A.D. Lewis Ave. There is no cost to apply. The City of Huntington pays for the cost of the banner program.
After the application period ends, the Black History Month Banner Committee, a volunteer group of Fairfield residents, will review all applications and select the 90 most-deserving individuals for the 2024 banner program.
