Spiritual understanding of the four species used during Sukkot.
They are mentioned in Leviticus 23:40-41
Palm branches
Willow branches
Myrtle branches
Etrog - beautiful fruit
Palms represent salvation, and symbolizes prosperity, victory, success, and joy, Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19, depicts for us the triumphal entry of Yeshua on Lamb choosing day.
Zechariah 9:9 speaks of the donkey Yeshua was to ride upon.
Psalm 118:25-26, is the culmination of the Psalms of Hallelujah, of Praise and hope for salvation. They are sung as the people come to Jerusalem with the hope of the coming of Messiah.
The Willow Tree's Spiritual Meaning in the Bible is Rebirth & Vitality.
In Ezekiel 17:5 states: “The prophet plants a seed and “sets it like a willow tree.” This makes reference to the willow tree's long-held symbolism of rebirth and vitality. The willow tree gives us hope, a sense of belonging. It espouses safety and the ability to let go of pain and suffering we have experienced to grow renewed, stronger, and bolder. The image of the willow tree is a path to stability, hope and healing
In Isaiah 44:3-4
3 For I will pour out water on the thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring And My blessing on your descendants; 4 They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams.
God's people will have the Spirit, the blessings and will prosper.
Myrtle trees aren’t impressive like the soaring cedars of Lebanon. Their beauty is born out of difficulty. The more that their roots struggle to find soil and water, the more beautiful the tree becomes. Its blossoms are fragrant when crushed and are used for medicines.
In scripture, myrtle trees are consistently seen as a symbol of the people of the nation of Israel—hearty and beautiful who fight for existence and bless others, even while being crushed.
Myrtle tree in Hebrew is Hadassah the Hebrew name of Esther.
Etrog - The etrog is a symbol of the beauty of nature and the desire for rain.
At Sukkot, the prayer is that God will bring the rains after Sukkot and after the farmers have had a chance to plant the first crop of barley and wheat. The time of sowing in Israel is in winter. The early rains (Oct/Nov) allow softening and loosening of the soil so that it can be worked and the seeds can be sown. The later rains (March/April), although small in total, are very important for the development of the plants so that the grain can flourish.
Thus, there are three main harvest seasons, namely spring (barley), summer (wheat) and autumn (grapes, fruits, olives). Passover was the feast of barley harvest (symbol of the firstfruits was Yeshua), Pentecost was the feast of wheat harvest (symbol of the firstfruits, was the church and outpouring of the Holy Spirit) and the autumn feast days in the 7th month are the feast of grape and fruit harvest (symbol of the bounty of the earth that God has provided).
May you have a blessed Sukkot time. It starts tomorrow, Wednesday October 16th at sundown.
