Happy St. Andrew's Day!

Happy St. Andrew's Day!

Today is the feast of Saint Andrew, apostle. He was the first disciple called by Jesus. In the gospel of John, Andrew was first a disciple of John the Baptist and began to follow Jesus after John declared of Jesus, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" (John 1:36) He also introduced his younger brother, Simon Peter, to Jesus. Tradition holds that Andrew was a missionary around the Black Sea, spreading the gospel is areas that are now part of Turkey and Greece. He was martyred by being tied to an 'X' shaped cross, since he believed he was not worthy to be crucified on the same kind of cross as Jesus. Among other things, Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, which is why their flag bears an X on it for the St Andrew's cross.

To observe today, pray through Psalm 19 and read Matthew 4:28-32. Prayerfully consider how you, in following Andrew's example, might more closely follow Jesus and brings others to him. Pray this collect for today from the Book of Common Prayer (p. 237):

Almighty God, who gave such grace to your apostle Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him: Give us, who are called by your Holy Word, grace to follow him without delay, and to bring those near to us into his gracious presence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
