đ Helping Hand Bedtime Story
The Trouble with the Big Black Bags
One day, a little boy named Tommy was helping sort donations at Helping Hand Rescue Mission.
As he walked into the donation room, he saw shelves neatly organized with baby clothes, winter coats, shoes, toys, and household items.
Then he noticed something else.
A giant black garbage bag.
Then another.
And another.
âWow!â Tommy said. âThose bags are huge! Someone must have donated a lot!â
âThey probably did,â smiled Miss Kim. âAnd weâre grateful for every donation.â
Tommy tried to lift one of the bags.
He couldnât.
It was too heavy.
âWhy donât people use black bags?â he asked.
Miss Kim sat down beside him.
âWell, there are a few reasons.â
She pointed to the bag.
âFirst, we canât see whatâs inside.â
Tommy nodded.
âIt could be baby clothes, kitchen items, shoes, books, or all of those mixed together.â
Then she pointed to another bag.
âSecond, when things are packed tightly into large bags, items can get wrinkled, damaged, or even moldy if moisture gets trapped inside.â
Tommy thought about that.
âAnd third,â she continued, âheavy bags can be difficult for volunteers to lift. Many of our volunteers are seniors, and some bags are simply too heavy to carry safely.â
Tommy looked at the bag again.
âHow do you know whatâs in there?â
âWe donât,â laughed Miss Kim. âSometimes we find wonderful treasures. Sometimes we find things that are broken. Sometimes we find both in the same bag.â
âThat sounds like a surprise.â
âIt is.â
Then Miss Kim showed Tommy some clear plastic bins and smaller bags.
âWhen donations are sorted into smaller bags or boxes, theyâre easier to carry, easier to organize, and easier to share with families.â
Tommy smiled.
âSo the problem isnât the donation.â
âExactly,â said Miss Kim. âWe love donations. We just want them packed in a way that helps us help others.â
That day, Tommy helped open the giant black bags and sort everything into smaller containers.
It took a while.
But when they were finished, dozens of items were ready to bless families in the community.
⨠Bedtime Thought
Generosity is wonderful.
But thoughtful generosity is even better.
When we think about the people who will receive, carry, sort, and distribute our gifts, we make it easier for kindness to reach those who need it most.
Sometimes helping isnât just about what we give.
Itâs also about how we give it.
The End. đâ¤ď¸
A Helping Hand Tip: If possible, please donate items in small boxes, reusable totes, or smaller bags labeled by category (clothing, shoes, kitchen items, toys, etc.). It helps volunteers serve families more quickly and safely. đ¤Thank you!
