Our thoughts regulate our behaviors.
That is why Paul is encouraging us to think about pure and good things that can only stem from a pure and good source– God. He is the outflow of all that is perfect and good (James 1:17). Should we then set our minds on what is impure and what is not good? Absolutely not. In fact, in Colossians 3:2 we are commanded by the Holy Spirit through Paul the Apostle to “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
“Set your mind on” means to exercise your mind towards having this natural inclination or to have earnest interest of.
Why? Because as believers in Christ, we have been born-again into a new resurrected life and as we follow Jesus, we are told we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16) and, if so, let us live out this truth.
How do we set our minds on these things?
Part of our responsibility is to develop a discipline of rejecting the things that are opposing to the things mentioned in Phil 4:8. Isaiah 26:3 says:
You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is STAYED ON YOU,
Because he trusts in You.
The mind stayed on the things of God is the mind that rejects the things mentioned in slide to and focuses on the things mentioned in slide 1 all by focusing on Jesus. He is the fullness of God (Col 2:9) so all purity, goodness, truth, honor, justice, excellence, etc... stems from Him and Him alone. Therefore, focus on Him not the things of this earth, and let your mind to be set on all that is good. As your mind is fixated on these truths in Christ, your behaviors and actions will follow. ✝️
