"History shows us that the belief in witchcraft rises when systems meant to protect us fail.

When justice twists, when leaders strip away rights that should be untouchable, people return to nature, to herbalism and folklore, because the roots of the earth feel more trustworthy than the hands of power."

CHALDEAN ORACLE
Hymn VI: To Hekate and Janus
(by Proclus Diadochus 410-485 AD)
(Text: E. Vogt ProcJi hymni Weisbaden 1957)

HAIL, many-named Mother of the Gods, whose children are fair!
Hail, mighty Hekate of the Threshold!

And hail to you also, Forefather Janus!
Imperishable Zeus, Hail to you, Zeus most high!

Shape the course of my life with luminous Light!
And make it laden with good things,
Drive sickness and evil from my limbs.
And when my soul rages about worldly things,
Deliver me purified by your soul-stirring rituals.

Yes, give me your hand I pray!
And reveal to me the pathways of divine guidance that I long for!
Then, shall I gaze upon that precious Light,
Whence I can flee the evil of our dark origin.

Yes, give me your hand I pray!
And when I am weary, bring me to the haven of piety with your winds.

Hail, many-named mother of the Gods, whose children arc fair
Hail, mighty Hekate of the Threshold!

And hail to you also Forefather Janus!
Imperishable Zeus, Hail to you, Zeus, most high!

My Hot Take:
In the Chaldean Oracles written in the 2nd century before the common era, Hekate expands from a chthonic goddess of (will-working)witchcraft, to a cosmic and holy mediator—the Cosmic World Soul, that assumes a role of the Second (fiddle) of a divine trinity, with Zeus as its Sacred Head and Transcendent Father. (*gag 😒) As is commonly known by her present day followers, Hekate is and asserts Her Will from within an amorphous "boundary" or nebulous space between the Intellectual fire of the Transcendent, and the material and physical manifestation as its mortal Carrier or Steward whom must carry it.

In the Chaldean Oracles, Hekate is presented, in earnest, as the Cosmic Soul, or Anima Mundi. She is identified as the role of Soul or Psyche that mediates between the divine Intellect or Demiurge, and the physical world where it is manifested. As a Mediator, Hekate acts as what I can characterize, as a plasmic connector, maintaining a liminal and transformative space, held in common between the so-called, ‘upper’ intellectual and ‘lower’ material realms. I find fascinating the structure and presumption of hierarchy embedded here, the power differential that mind (Zeus) is superior to the physical experience of reality as blood and flesh (man)— a literal ‘mind’ over ‘matter,’ denoting that in the presumed ascension space, rapture outweighs struggle, and that here in the lived world, struggle outweighs rapture, again asserting that the physical is bereft of reward, joy, and peace.

From a standing order of spiritual magnitude, my own observation begs the question whether material bodies aren’t also fighting to enter the physical—and you know to what I refer, đŸ‘»but I tangentialize . . . To my mind, Hekate does not exist in this vertical position between some binary construct or column of power between the Above and Below, but rather, She oversees an incident by incident crossing, by the Will of Witches whose work implies travel between these.

She is depicted as the "womb" into which the “Father” sows the enlivening Sparks of creation, which She then enables through her own progenic power. Yet an alternate perspective could be that Hekate could be a channel to Zeus’s divine influence by guiding the human soul toward a purification and “ascent” —again using terminology that reflects this unequal and superior value (without the dirt and scars of physical backstory) of ascension, but in truth, could also be an “en-Goddess-ing” that enables humans like Her, mystical communication with the sacred, and the equally holy power to guide and create life.

The tone of the Chaldean Oracle obviates the adoption of Zeus in his popular Classical Hellenic placement as Most High, which, from the perspective of a feminist, and Devotee of my Matron, signals the subversion of my Goddess as a Titan, into the mandated employ of the uber Patriarch, Zeus (insert nauseated resentment for the loss of Her centrality).

Commonplace mythology historically recognizes Hekate as a goddess of the crossroads and magic—often feared due to absence of cultural or educational exposure to Her complexities— the Chaldean Hekate is portrayed as bright, celestial radiance, which She is, and according to scholar and author Sarah Iles Johnston's analysis, is a Soteira(Savior) who helps humans ESCAPE the constraints of fate, should they will it.

The theological structure of the Chaldean Oracle, a hierarchical or top to bottom power flow is laid out, one which assumes that the higher more desired state is ascendancy over our constant and obligatory material and bodily needs, again, as if the sublime bodies that exist in that liminal plasma aren’t equally seeking their translation to states of living, breathing physical form. I am a Witch and social justice warrior after all. What I see is the ‘Father’ position is the “Supreme” transcendent Source, and that Hekate is the instrument of passage through which She is assigned the intercessory Power that mediates flow toward the Intellect as a Demiurge or Creative Force capitalized in my reverence for the holy act of expression.

In the Chaldean Oracle, Hekate’s role is summarized by her function as the great cosmic link whom presides over the phase of our “becoming-ness” toward “ascension”. My argument is that Hekate is not so much the servant of Zeus’s to ferry humanity to his self-importance, as She is a Guide and Nurturer to our process. She presides over every holy act of a struggle, and supports our drive to finding our own “muchness,” and that She is present in every magical act, and spiritual epiphany.

HAIL HEKATE SOTEIRA!

Rise up good people. RISE UP. Because you know, what you know, and how you know it has been gaslit too long into believing that you don’t know it at all. Let’s change that.

“One of you must know the CORRECT answer,” isn’t just an insulting phrase for an Educator to use, but one of the most destructive to have been uttered. This phrase presumes none of the learners have answer, let alone the right one. I say it’s intended to sow doubt into the self-esteem of the listener, and I say ‘listener’ bc this is certainly not a healthy environment to encourage ‘learning’. This is a patriarchal teaching position that demeans learners and weakens belief in themselves, and introduces and builds up the idea that there exists an authority figure to whom the empty vessels must submit. Empty? Why? I bestow the answers. You learn my answers. What’s wrong with that? An authority figure’s control of what constitutes knowledge, ie: the most desirable conclusions to praise and spotlight, then obviously those that prop up the idea that facts are needed from the dominant regime. The regime will determine favorable language. The regime will attack attitudes and language that spark doubt, reflect poorly upon, or point to a definitive inaccuracy, you can bet there will be censorship, to the severest degree, in some cases. Let me say this differently, if Nature is your connection to the Divine, or water is your element, or if spirits sit and speak with you directly, and a maybe you know that a fistful of plantain leaves in your lunch are beneficial, if you know all this to be living, breathing magic, what need have you of a Priest Class? A state sponsored Priest Class.

I have exchanged information with other studied enthusiasts, I have also debated principles of “Knowing” with other philosophers, and I have also sat in the chair of the Critic, of structure and sources of “facts,” and I have required that Primary sources, uncolored by another’s residual connection-making, be present for the choice making of the learner. What I describe, respected reader, is a learning space that reflects the rights of a learner to put upon their mind-table, all and any of the subject areas they find provocative and therefore set upon a path of joyful satisfaction. Especially when, and I know you see where I’m going with this, an Authority figure shows up, clears off the Buffet Table of choices, that would no doubt lead to the fullest expression of your mind, voice and spirit, to instead slap a tray down on your lap, throw a polystyrene box down on it, and inside, a state determined nothing-burger, bereft of any intellectual nutritional value with the expectation that you will get that down your throat, and like it.

I am a Witch, an educated Educator, an action based Activist, a radical proponent of no preferences/no punishments organization of the societal living space based on identity, and an enthusiastic DE-CON-STRUC-TION-IST of patriarchal scaffolding, such that NOTHING of its hierarchical power disparities survive. I Virgo, therefore I must— evaluate, make change, reevaluate, innovate, and if that requires an unprecedented overhaul of previous, Jurassicly outdated, cancerous threats to joyful models of learning, THEN BY THE TITAN OF WITCHCRAFT, SO BE IT. Curiosity, and the provision of high-quality opportunities to know our own and others’ power, must be priority! Fulfillment must be the prize we chase.

Four hundred and seven years ago, education in America was seeded directly from the English tradition of the Patriarchy. Equality has outgrown its confines. As the Founder of Temple Hekate Altar of the Moon, I ask you to entertain the idea of a new tradition of spirituality, scholarship and service that calls out authoritarianism, establishes an alternative model for community building, and finds foothold in this Chaos. The new world will require wholesale departure from the Old. What purchase we can find in the reenvisioning of Western civilization can be found in the simplest of action. Let us not underestimate the importance and power of collective action— I offer the No Kings March as evidence of the power of the people. Creating participation in a new model of gathering can be as easy as pooling strategies for circumstances we have in common, and edifying it as practice. Pooling tried and true strategies together invariably leads to “popcorn,” my term for creative generation of innovation, and I am honored to be a part and enabler of this process. Community creativity reinforces collaborative problem solving, engenders fulfillment and joy, which I mentioned earlier, and breaches the waters of mediocrity to sn**ch comets right out of the sky!

Temple Hekate Altar of the Moon in Huntersville NC, is a seed of this vision, belief and action. We are goal minded. We are witches and pagans with an appetite for an actual damn difference to be made. We have talent and commitment on our side. What we build, we build for a world where accumulated wisdom is consulted with, and explored, for its value in the present, and banked for the future. We’re moving ahead, putting desire voices and wisdom from all experiences, previously disqualified and silenced, to so that a deep and long breath can be taken in the damn world! Violence, exclusion, fear have no place in the world, and the members of Temple Hekate want that difference. Our Charter is much more than a a list of bylaws. It is a call for community builders, a plan to live differently. I’d like to offer our Charter for transparency, for group examination, troubleshooting and suggestions. I want to be mindful and inclusive of the Witches and Pagans called to this work, creatures of our own minds, who tho suppressed, STILL dream forward.

Please, take a look at our Charter, help us think expanded thoughts about this by sharing yours. If you can’t but still wish to support us, please CashApp a $5 or more donation to $TempleHekateAoM to help sustain our endeavor. Our Charter is pinned to the top of this page. Now is the time.
