The village of Crest Hill was alive in my youth because of Trough Hill Baptist Church. Now that I am older at 68 I find solace in the comfort and love within this old church. It sent legions of believers into the world. Many have moved away. Yet, here I stay near where my mother Violet and father Eugene now lie, my brother Winsten too and grandma Elsie and Grandpop Golder Anderson, Great Grands Carah and Chetister and finally Easter Adelaide Nelson who wanted this little church to be built in this little ville so long ago. You did it Grandma Easter. We are so much stronger because of your dream for us. I hope my grandchildren will learn how far God has reached into the many generations that came after women like Easter, and married couples like Louisa and John Williams, Helen Anderson Green and George O'Neil Green, Wister and Nettie Williams, Jack and Pauline Carter, Walter and Anne Franklin, Mary Brown, Moses and Gertrude Lane, Lula and Hugh Nelson, Charles and Charlotte Anderson, Charles and Adeline Grimsley Anderson, Joseph and Amelia Lane, Thornton and Emily Hill, Benjamin and Mary Moore, Benjamin and Mary Anderson Robinson, Henry and Mary Baltimore, Jake and Angeline Baltimore, Alexander and Dolly Ann Russell, The Rectors, Cooks, Corbins, Johnsons, Adams, and so many others have crossed the threshold into our sanctuary. Many now lie in that cemetery next to Trough Hill Baptist Church. It will always hold a special place in my heart even though I may move away to be closer to my own grandkids one day. I pray the doors can withstand the pestilence now upon us. Stand tall little beacon and let your light so shine on all the descendants of Crest Hill no matter where they are!
