Temple Beth Torah - Humble, Texas

Temple Beth Torah - Humble, Texas Temple Beth Torah was founded in 1983 by a group of Jewish families who felt strongly that we needed a synagogue to serve the Humble-Kingwood area.

Temple Beth Torah is a small but growing reform synagogue in the Humble-Kingwood area, determined to meet the needs of the growing Jewish community in northeast Houston. Initially meeting at members houses and other venues, we purchased our current home in 1989. From the outset, Temple Beth Torah has been a driving force in the Jewish religious community in northeast Houston. In 1997, we completed a major renovation of our sanctuary which was designed and constructed by our members.

We were thrilled to visit Temple Beth Torah - Humble, Texas (TBT) this Shabbat. More than 60 people in this warm and welcoming community joined for services, dinner, and an oneg. Our CEO Renee Wizig-Barrios shared the many ways Federation is working to support TBT and congregations in Houston's suburbs including through our Community Security Program, teacher professional development, and by providing TBT with a grant to help with roof repairs after Hurricane Beryl.
Rabbi Dan Gordon and President Mike Miller presented Wizig-Barrios with a plaque that reads, "In appreciation of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston for support, encouragement, and assistance throughout the years." Thank you to Federation Board Member and TBT member Hy Penn for arranging the visit!

Just finished a fabulous weekend with Temple Beth Torah - Humble, Texas (outside of Houston).

I had been with this community countless times over Zoom since 2020, but this is the first time I was able to be with them in person! I will always be grateful to Zoom for allowing me to visit communities when there weren’t any other options, but there is no comparison to raising our voices in song together.

The Open House Weekend is being sponsored by Howard and Ruth Tobin, in memory of Tracy Tobin Johnson and Gail Preusse Tobin. Tracy (1964-2010) died at an early age of breast cancer. She was a beloved teacher and active at many levels at Temple Beth Torah. Her three children became bar and bat mitzvah on our bimah. Tracy’s mother, Gail (1938-2022), was a beloved teacher at Temple Mizpah in Abilene, Texas, where her three children grew up and became bar and bat mitzvah. In fact, Tracy was the first ever bat mitzvah at Temple Mizpah. Both Tracy and Gail were devoted to the spirit of Jewish
learning, and their memories stay alive when young (and not-so-young) people are inspired to embrace Judaism. Howard, and his current wife, Ruth, while living on their ranch in Ovalo, TX continue to support Temple Beth Torah - a warm, friendly, accepting congregation. They regret they were unable to be present, but wish you all an inspiring weekend.

RSVP to [email protected] for Saturday’s dinner and/or Sunday’s lunch by Wednesday, August 23rd.
