Daniel, in scripture was called a righteous man, yet he repented for the nation of Israel as if he had committed the sins. What if we Christians prayed this way for our nation? I rewrote Daniel's prayer of chapter 9 for America's Christians. Let us stand in the gap for our nation over the next few weeks. We are at a critical point in our nation.
Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love with those who love Him and keep His commandments: We come before You today in humility, acknowledging our absolute dependence on You.
We have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from Your truth and Your moral laws. We have ignored the words of Your servants—the godly men and women who have spoken Your truth throughout our history to our leaders, our influencers, and all the people of our land.
Lord, You are righteous, but today we are covered with shame. From our highest offices to our local communities, we have broken faith with You. We have traded Your eternal truths for cultural convenience, and we have elevated our own comfort, wealth, and division above Your holiness.
To You, O Lord our God, belong mercy and forgiveness, even though we have rebelled against You. We have not obeyed the Lord our God or walked in the ways You set before us in Scripture. All across America, we have transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to hear Your voice. Therefore, the natural consequences of walking away from Your protection are pouring out over our land.
But You, Lord, are a God of justice and truth. You are entirely justified in the fracturing and brokenness we see in our society today, because You are faithful to Your word, yet we have refused to seek Your face or turn from our wrongdoings.
And now, Lord our God, You who brought Your church out of darkness, who have uniquely blessed this nation throughout its history, and who made Your name known across the earth through us—we confess that we have acted wickedly.
Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, turn away Your anger and Your wrath from our cities and our nation. Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made us a object of scorn to those around us.
Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of Your servant. For Your own sake, Lord, look with favor on Your desolate places. Open Your eyes and see our brokenness and the spiritual exile of a nation that was once shaped by Your word.
We do not make requests of You because we are righteous, or because America deserves Your favor. We pray because of Your great mercy.
Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For Your own sake, my God, do not delay, because Your church and Your people bear Your Name.
