THE POWER (DUNAMIS) OF
THE HOLY GHOST (PNEUMA)

Act 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” Luk 4:14 “And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee” 2 Ti 1:7 “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” Rom 8:11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you”

dunamis
doo'-nam-is
From G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself): - ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.

pneuma
pnyoo'-mah
From G4154; a current of air, that is, breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively a spirit, that is, (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, daemon, or (divine) God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy spirit: - ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind.

1. What is the source of the energy, the freshness, and the forcefulness of the Pentecostal/charismatic movement that has propelled it to become the largest Protestant body? The Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost. Same thing!
2. The Fingerprints of the Holy Spirit are everywhere. From Genesis to Revelation the Person of the Holy Ghost permeates the working of God in this world.
3. Without the working of the Holy Ghost there would have been no New Testament church to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.
4. The baptism in the Holy Ghost is a vital milestone in the believer's progress because it grants full power to the Spirit. It is the beginning of a great adventure in Christian living called "life in the Spirit."
5. The Golden Text of Pentecostalism is "And they were all filled with a Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance" Acts 2:4. John 7:38-39 “Jesus promised, He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.).
6. Jesus called this experience “the promise of the Father” and said we would be “endued with power from on high” Luke 24:49. He foretold we would be “baptized with the Holy Ghost” Acts 1:5. Peter called it “the gift of the Holy Spirit” Acts 2:38; that God was "pouring out His Spirit upon all flesh" Acts 2:17.
7. There is an emotional quality to Spirit baptism. The Greek word ecsistanto (i.e., ecstasy) is twice used in Acts to describe those who saw the disciples filled with the Spirit. This word ecstasy denotes “human’s spirit carried to a level of high elevation”.
8. In this message I am referring to the public gift and the private gift of tongues, the personal, uninterpreted prayer language given to the believer when they’re baptized in the Holy Ghost according to Acts 2:4, 10:46, and 19:6.
9. So we are going to look at what “Praying in the Spirit” (Eph. 6:18) is, its benefits, and additional reasons why we should seek this gift.

I. AS AN AID TO PRAYER
A. WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO PRAY
1. “Likewise the Spirit also helps [Gr. “takes, shares”] in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God” Rom. 8:26-27, NKJV.
2. Tongues relate the worshiper directly to God and transcend the ordinary limitations of human speech. Scripture contrasts prayer in the Spirit with prayer framed by human understanding (1 Cor. 14:14-15). The Holy Ghost can do more and say more in 10 minutes than you could in 10 hours!!!
3. Karl Barth referred to tongues as "expressing the inexpressible." Through tongues, prayer and worship are raised to their highest level and elevated far above superficial lip and vocal service.
4. Speaking in tongues is a way of praying; leaving the realm of human thought and allowing the Holy Ghost to pray according to the will of God.
5. It is expressly said to be prayers prayed according to God’s will. Those are the kinds of prayers which are answered! (1 John 5:14-15).
B. IT BYPASSES OUR MINDS
Although there are various languages on this vast planet, they will not always get you the responses you’re looking for; during the course of a worship service or in private prayer; That’s why we need THE HEAVENLY LANGUAGE!
2. Paul said, “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful” 1 Cor. 14:14.
3. In the human, there are two origins of prayer: the living human spirit or the mind. In Paul's description, the human spirit is praying without the interaction of the human mind.
4. Why is bypassing the mind important? Because often our minds are so clouded with trouble that we can’t see what’s the right direction to go. The Holy Ghost knows which way we should go!
5. And just as a lawyer presents our case in the proper phraseology for the courtroom, the Holy Spirit rewrites our requests in such a way as to be fitting and weighty for the throne room of God. Thank God for the Holy Ghost!
C. HELPS US PRAY FOR UNKNOWN NEEDS
1. For he that speaks in an unknown tongue in the spirit, he speaks mysteries” 1 Cor. 14:2.
2. According to W. E. Vine, the Greek word is mysterion (mysteries) refers to that which is "outside the range of unassisted natural apprehension ...to those only who are illuminated by His Spirit" (Vine’s, p. 97).
3. One time I was praying in the Spirit, very earnestly, when I saw a vision of who I was praying for -- an old man in a convalescent home. He was in great pain.
4. I went to see him and he had been put in the hospital. Only the Holy Spirit knew that and had me praying for him.
D. IS “GIVING THANKS” “BLESSING”
1. In Acts 2:11, the disciples were said to be declaring (in tongues) "the wonderful works of God." There is no doubt that when we’re praying in the Spirit to God that a large portion of our prayer is extolling and blessing God!

II. HE GIVES PERSONAL BENEFITS
A. EDIFIES/ BUILDS YOU UP
1. Paul said, “He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself” 1 Cor. 14:4.
2. The Greek word is oikodomei. The word for ‘home’ and ‘demo’ means ‘to build.’ Applied to this verse it means the promotion of spiritual growth or progress.
3. When you’re praying in the Spirit, your spiritual man/ woman is being fashioned, molded, assembled, developed, strengthened, and quickened.
4. It’s like your own personal generator. You have something working inside of you to build you up, that a person who doesn’t pray in tongues DOES NOT have! This is one of the greatest reasons to desire this gift.
B. STIMULATES YOUR FAITH
1. “But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” Jude 20, KJV.
2. Praying in the Spirit has the effect of stimulating our faith. Somehow the Spirit strengthens our ability to believe and hold fast to God’s Word.
3. It strengthens character. I’ve long contended that those who pray have the strongest convictions. That’s what happens when we pray in the Spirit.

C. GIVES A SPIRITUAL BLESSING
1. About tongues God said, “This is the resting place, let the weary rest”; and, “This is the place of repose”— but they would not listen” Isa. 28:12.
2. Isaiah (quoted by Paul in 1 Cor. 14:21) prophesied this about speaking in tongues. Praying in the Spirit ushers the ONE PRAYING into a place of rest and peaceful relaxation. Unfortunately more Christians don’t take this way of peace. Hymn – “Oh what peace we often forfeit
”

III. MORE REASONS TO SEEK THIS GIFT
A. IT’S COMMANDED
1. “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” “in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit
.you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” Acts 1:5,8.
2. “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues” Mark 16:17.
3. We’re not to be sign-less Christians. The only signs in some churches are enter and exit signs! Peter said Joel’s prophesy (Acts 2:17-18) explained the tongues phenomena. The Spirit was being poured out on “ALL flesh.” Will we miss out on it?
B. IT’S DESIRABLE
1. Paul exhorted us to “earnestly desire” the ‘charismata’ (1 Cor. 12:31; gifts of grace) and the ‘pneumatica’ (14:1; gifts of Spirit).
2. The words “earnestly desire” translate the same word, “zeloute,” from which we get our word, “zealous.” It literally means to “have warmth of feeling for” (Strong’s).
3. We should have a burning zeal for the spiritual blessings that will benefit us, and ultimately, the Church!
C. IT’S A DOORWAY TO THE GIFTS OF SPIRIT
1. The last reason to seek this gift is that it’s a doorway gift that opens the door to the other gifts.
2. Tongues and interpretation are given last place in the list of gifts (1 Cor. 12:8-10) and Paul speaks of prophecy as ‘greater’ than tongues (14:5).
3. Every account where the phenomenon of the Spirit baptism was recorded in Acts, tongues was the norm (2:4; 10:46). Once it was said prophesying also took place (19:6).
4. Thus, it’s the easiest to receive and as a faith-builder, will lead the believer into the expression of the other gifts.

A.
1. A man saved for years to purchase passage on a ship for he and his son to America. They brought with them all the food they could, but soon got down to eating canned green beans, cold.
2. At last the son said, "I can eat those anymore! Do you have any money so I can go buy something else?" The dad gave him his last four dollars. On the way through the cafeteria, the son was overwhelmed with all the different kinds of food people were eating.
3. He went to the cafeteria counter and tried to purchase a meal. The man behind the counter said, "It all comes free when you purchase your ticket for passage! You could've been eating this all along, as much as you want!"
4. The same is true of God's blessings in the Holy Spirit: when you get saved, they're all available to you, as much as you want! All you have to do is ask.

WHAT THE ENEMY DON’T KNOW WILL HURT HIM
(MY SECRET RIVER)
Ps. 46:1-11
2nd Chronicles 32:30 (NIV): “It was Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Gihon spring and channeled the water down to the west side of the City of David.”

A. Psalms 46:1-11
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Today we’re looking at what gave Hezekiah hope when disaster came to him and how he developed a secret water source in the midst of the enemy’s attacks.
TROUBLE SURROUNDS HEZEKIAH
A. THE PSALMIST’S PICTURE
1. Verse 3: The mountains are collapsing, tidal waves roaring, earthquakes shaking the land.
2. Verse 6 The nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall. God lifts His voice – the earth melts.

B. EXPLANATION OF THE TEXT
1. Hezekiah (was king 715-686 BC) and lived in a time when the nation was invaded by the Assyrians. In 701 BC, Sennacherib’s Assyrian armies invaded Judah, 2 Kings 18–19; Isaiah 36–37. They overran forty-six walled towns and laid siege to Jerusalem. It was “like a bird in a cage” (Sennacherib Prism).
2. There’s no way to describe the feeling of being overwhelmed by violence and irresistible force. It seemed to the Israelites like the whole world was collapsing and the end of the world, as they knew it, had come. They believed they were not going to survive.

C. APPLICATION TO TODAY
1. It seems like that today. There’s political turmoil, violence, and war in Iran & Ukraine. Then there’s personal troubles like our children running away; the IRS ramping up their investigations of us; jobs being terminated; we’re sued; a family member gets cancer; a series of things/events bringing on financial hurdles, etc.
2. In those moments it seems like our world is crashing down. We’re stunned & don’t know what to do. There seems to be no hope in sight.
3. It seems like when you find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, & the price of gold collapses; You strike oil, & the oil well catches fire; Your ship comes in, & it sinks in the harbor. Everything in life is so uncertain.
4. Then the Sons of Korah (the writer) reminds us of our great hope.

OUR RESPONSE TO TROUBLE
A. HEZEKIAH’S CONFIDENCE
1. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble! Therefore we will not fear...” (1-2). In verse 5 “God is in her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day” (at the crucial moment). Verse 7 & 11 add, “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
2. Despite the invasion and capture of most of his kingdom, Hezekiah refused to give-in to fear. He put his trust in God. He believed God was with him & despite defeats in other areas, God would come th
rough for him. God would keep His word.
B. : Do we really trust God?
1. A Christian man had worked for a business for more than 25 years. One day his employer said to him, "A young man's going to report for work today. He'll be doing the same kind of work you've been doing. I want you to train him for the work."
2. The man thought, "I have been sick and away from work a lot in the last year. They’re probably going to replace me by this young man I’ve been asked to train!"
3. At the end of the day, he went home, dejected and discouraged. He told his wife, “My boss asked me to train a young guy to do my kind of job. He's the president's nephew; he's sure got a lot better backing to keep his job than I do! I’m worried about it. "
4. His wife replied, "Oh, I see. So my husband doesn't have any backing? No one but the Lord God of hosts Who formed the universe and made the sea and the dry land? Isn't that a little higher backing?”
5. “You’re right, Honey! I shouldn’t have forgotten Who provides & guides my steps!”

TESTIMONY TIME
A. PSALMIST’S REJOICING
1. Verses 8-9: Come & see what the Lord has done...the desolations He has worked...the wars He’s stopped...the bows & spears He’s broken...and the shields He’s burned.
2. The writer tells how God responded to Hezekiah’s faith & defeated the greatest army in that part of the world, without Hezekiah lifting a finger.

B. HOW IT HAPPENED
14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers [of Sennacherib] and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread the letter out before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16...listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God. 19 Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.” 35 That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a 185,000 in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. 37 [and]his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword...” 2 Kings 19:14-19; 35-37.

C. DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN GOD CAME THROUGH FOR YOU?
1. When God turned your mourning into joy?
2. Someone said,
“If your problems are looking big, and your God is looking small, then you're looking at God through the wrong end of the binoculars.” Change your perspective! See how BIG GOD IS!
3. God took Hezekiah’s impossible situation and worked an absolute miracle: He wiped out their enemy and ran them out of the country! It was so overwhelming that several other enemy countries sent ambassadors to see the King that God had fought for begging for mercy. THE ENEMY WAS BEGGING FOR MERCY!

OUR SECRET SOURCE OF WATER
Verse 4 – “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God...” 2 Kings 19:4.

A. HEZEKIAH DUG DEEPER INTO GOD
1. King Hezekiah, as the Assyrians were invading the land, decided to deprive them of water by blocking the Upper Gihon Spring and channeling it 533 yards to the pool of Siloam.
2. The stone masons had to tunnel through solid rock. Two teams of miners began tunneling from opposite ends. Both tunnels weaved back and forth, but the miraculous thing was that they met in the middle, far underground, with only a 12-inch difference – and the difference was in the right direction for the water to flow! Engineers today still scratch their heads at how they did it!
3. THERE’S NO WATER IN THIS WORLD. We often think that there is some spiritual refreshment in the natural world, but in reality there is NONE.
4. No other God, besides Jehovah, has any water. They are empty man-made masks that offer peace but can provide none. The Creator God is not in them.

B. US & OUR SECRET WELL OF WATER
1. There’s a secret source of water for God’s people that those outside Christ don’t have NOR DO THEY UNDERSTAND. But our access to this water doesn’t come easy. We must labor to bring it into our lives.
2. The continuous anointing of the HOLY GHOST doesn’t happen by accident. It takes deliberate action. We must chip away at our old natures and tunnel our way into the Spirit to God. Once we get this permanent connection to God, it will sustain us in times of drought and hardship. When others give up and fall by the wayside, we will have enduring strength to continue on in victory!
3. Our source of Life and refreshment will be deep & unassailable. Even our enemies will finally give up and abandon their efforts – praise God! “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells!” (4).

Verse 10 says, “Be still & know that I am God – I WILL be exalted!” IT’S NOT BY MIGHT, NOT BY POWER, BUT BY MY SPIRIT, SAYS THE LORD OF HOSTS! All we need to do is Be still and know Him as our God!

1. Charles Elliott had a problem. He had a contract to build an engineering marvel – a suspension bridge over the Niagara River. But he had no way of stretching his first cable between the shores. Any boat that tried to cross the falls would be swept over. Then Elliott got an idea.
2. If a kite, carrying a cord, could be flown across the river, the cord could then be used to pull larger cables across. So Elliott announced a kite-flying contest, and a young man named Homan Walsh responded.
3. On Walsh’s first attempt the kite’s cord broke when it caught in the river’s ice, but on his next try he succeeded in flying his kite to the opposite shore of the river.
4. From the light string to a heavier rope and then to a cable. The vital link was established, and the bridge built. [Today in the Word, MBI, August, 1991, p. 6]
5. A little wind, a kite, and string bridged a huge rushing river. So the Holy Spirit, though invisible & “you don’t know where He comes from or where He’s going” is the mighty force who draws the world to salvation and fills you with His all-powerful presence!
