Whether it was walking down Warren Street or inside of the many restaurants and coffee shops around, chances are, you have been greeted with a warm smile and a genuine interaction with Debera Salomon at some point in Hudson, N.Y. Being universally kind and empathetic is embedded in her personality, and she made an impression on every person – stranger or close family – she crossed paths with.
That special light dimmed at 11:30 pm on August 13, 2026, when Debera Grace Wheeler Salomon, a lifelong resident of Hudson, passed away peacefully after having been surrounded by her family and the people who mattered to her the most.
In her 82 years on earth, Debera lived a full and purposeful life. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, entrepreneur, neighbor, traveler, caregiver, and sports fan. Born on June 26, 1944, the daughter of Fred Ward Wheeler Jr. (died 1960) and Florence Hermance Wheeler (died 1992), she grew up on Worth Avenue, attended Hudson High School and Albany Business College. Her childhood memories often involve spending many summers with her Wheeler cousins at Copake Lake playing baseball and eating ice cream. She was always up for attending open houses with her dad for his real estate business.
In 1971, Debera married the love of her life, Mark Alan Salomon, at Congregation Anshe Emeth in Hudson. They were married for almost 35 years upon his death in 2006. Before kids, the pair owned Jet Travel and the 510 Warren Street building, on the cusp of Hudson’s renaissance. As part of their business they enjoyed traveling the world and hand delivering airline tickets to customers. The happy couple raised two kids, in a charming house on Jenkins Parkway. She loved long drives through country roads and down through Hudson to the Boat Lunch to see the Hudson River. The family were members at Congregation Anshe Emeth, a local Jewish community.
She went on to become a Teacher's Aide at John L. Edwards Elementary School and then a Clerk at Columbia County Real Property Tax Office. Her favorite part about this work was interacting with people that were part of the first waves of out-of-towners settling into Hudson and developing property, learning about their research, and what was important to them. She retired in the spring of 2006.
Debera’s retirement years were filled with joy and spending lots of time with her two children and two grandchildren. She loved reading literary non-fiction books on her rocking chair. Maple walnut ice cream, pizza, matzoh ball soup, bagels with lox and cream cheese, diners, and nice restaurants on special occasions. Trips to Maine with family and friends, where she’d always order lobster rolls on the beach. She and Mark could spend hours watching the tide roll in and out. Holiday dinners with the Salomon family. She enjoyed visiting Connecticut to tour historic homes and play with her daughter’s dogs. She also cherished the many train rides between Hudson and Brooklyn, to spend time with her son and two grandsons and take walks through Prospect Park.
Her final home was a townhouse she built in Mount Ray Estates, before spending the final eighteen months at PineHaven Nursing Home. She is survived by her daughter, Robin Salomon Forziati of Granby, C.T. (son-in-law Rick) and son, Michael Salomon of Mount Pleasant, S.C. (daughter-in-law Matilde); her grandchildren, Sebastian (Age 8) and Luca (Age 6); her many family members and friends, and her special companion, John Holsapple, a childhood friend who she reconnected with in recent years.
Debera would tell anyone and everyone all about her children and grandchildren and how proud she was of them but would also revel in the success and accomplishments of all of her extended family and friends. That is who Debera was.
Services will be conducted at 8:45 a.m. Friday, August 21st at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green St., Hudson. Interment will be in Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.
