A Thanksgiving Prayer

Gracious, generous, and merciful God,
You are the source of every good gift, of every good thing.
You are the Creator God who brings forth the harvest to feed the world.
You are the source of all our hope; for this life and the next.
We give you thanks.

On this day, turn our gratitude into more than mere sentiment.
Open our eyes to see how deeply we depend on you;
for breath, for our daily bread,
and for your lavish mercy we neither earn or deserve.
Open our hearts to genuinely see our neighbors;
especially those who hunger, who grieve, and are lonely or forgotten.
Make our thanksgiving real in shared tables,
courageous in generosity, persistent in care, and rich in love.
We give you thanks.

We thank you for the cross and the empty tomb, victory over sin and death.
You have shown us that your abundance is not measured
in possessions or perfection but in the life you give to the world.
Teach us to trust in your grace, to see you at work in weakness,
and to find joy not in what we own but in belonging to you.
We give you thanks.

Gather us together into the unity of the Holy Spirit.
Bless the meals we share today,
the stories we tell, and the community you form.
Make us signs of your kingdom;
people who practice mercy, seek justice,
and welcome all as Christ has welcomed us.
We give you thanks.

For all this, and for the countless gifts we overlook,
we give you thanks, through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

Sunday Service from Trinity Lutheran Church in Hubbard, NE

Let us pray:

As my family and I watch the incredible events in Washington DC this evening I am deeply saddened. A small group of aggressors are determined to drive the wedge deeper into and widen the schism in our civil society. These are not political acts but are acts of aggression against our democracy. Now, right now, we need to pull together as Americans, put civility ahead of politics and deny these hooligans any moment in the spotlight. As Christians, we owe it to God.

We need, we must, come together as Americans – Christians, Jews, and Muslims, and people of all faiths. We need to come together in prayer, fervent and unceasing. We pray for domestic tranquility and a peaceful transition of power. We pray for calm, we pray for understanding, we pray for our American way of life.

Jesus Christ said “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” We give honor to God by participating in a peaceful political process as Christians and as Americans. In this great country, what is not taken by popular democracy we cannot permit to be taken by force. As Christians, we must allow the political process to peacefully unfold and stand by to defend our right to domestic tranquility. We cannot allow these usurpers any measure of dignity.

Tonight, I pray for our nation and all of our diverse people. I pray that calm and reasoning minds prevail over any power that would have us divided. I pray for respect and dignity to prevail over the evil seeking to undermine the democratic foundations of our country.

For the sake of God and country, let us pray.
