Hoyt United Methodist Church

Hoyt United Methodist Church A little church that could and does, over 125 years of caring. The Members and Friends of Hoyt UMC Welcome You! The first church services were held by Rev.
(2)

In 1876, the Methodist Church Society in Douglas Township had 35 members. John Woodburn in the Woburn Schoolhouse three miles west of the present site of Hoyt. On August 24, 1885, a charter was filed in the office of the Secretary of State. Trustees Alvin Moore, Jeremiah Chubb, John Miles, J.W. Pettijohn, Peter Stewart, Erza Swartz, and Daniel Vorhees came to an agreement with A.H. Aikens for one

acre of ground located on what is now the northern section of Hoyt Cemetary. A building was erected for $1,800.00. It was dedicated on May 23, 1886. The Methodist Congregations held services every other Sunday. On alternate Sundays, services were held by the Baptists and United Brethren Congregations. A union Sabbath School was established by the churches October 2, 1887. A Young People's Social Society was formed October 18, 1887. The Ladies Aid Society has also been very active through the years. In 1896, trustees purchased two lots on Highland Ave. from A.D. Walker for $275.00. The original building was moved to this site and rededicated on July 5, 1896. In March, 1905, the trustees voted to build a parsonage. The Methodist Conference sent a permanent minister to the combined Hoyt and Mayetta charges. July, 1910, trustees decided to tear down the old church and erect a new one. Being unable to purchase 25 feet to the south of the church, the parsonage was moved further north to accommodate the larger building. This building was dedicated February 26, 1911. In 1961, a barracks was added and remodeled by church members for Sunday School use. It was dedicated May 24, 1964. In early 1991, funds were raised by the membership to purchase the lot to the south of the church from Angie Miller Brown. The cost was $3,000.00. It was purchased for future expansion. In 1992 there were 130 members. The church presently has 92 members. In February of 1992, the church adopted the following vision: The vision of the Hoyt United Methodist Church is to be a growing community of faith, strengthened through the nurturing and outreaching ministry of Jesus Christ! A little church that could and does, over 100 years of caring.

CALL TO WORSHIP
Children of God, when we face strife, upset, and harm in our midst, we so often turn to God and ask:
How many times should I forgive?
When Jesus answers that we should forgive again and again and again, we are tempted to repeat the question:
How many times should I forgive?
Until God turns the question around: “How many times have I forgiven you?”
Seventy times seven.
“How many times have I loved you?”
Seventy times seven.
“How many times has my grace been sufficient for you?”
Seventy times seven.
Let us learn, then, how to forgive not out of our own power, but out of God’s, who forgives us that we might be free to learn to live with one another well.
Amen.

1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my innermost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits - 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: 8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

Second Reading: Matthew 18:21-35 NIVJeff
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. 29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’ 30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

CALL TO WORSHIP
Pilgrims on the way, when we feel lost and ask for a sign to show us the way out of our confusion,
We remember that when we gather to worship, we find God in our midst.

When we face obstacles and barriers that keep us from the life God has called us to,
We remember that God is always at work among us, protecting and tending our well-being.

When cannot find our way out of conflict and discord,
We remember that God calls and equips us for the work of reconciliation.

When we struggle to pay attention to how God is at work all around us,
We remember God’s call to sit, eat, and tell one another the stories of God’s faithfulness.

Pilgrims on the way, when we watch for signs of God among us,
Let us remember that we too are signs of God’s presence for others! Amen.

33 Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. 35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. 36 Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. 37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. 38 Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. 39 Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. 40 How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.

Congregational Song: “The Gift of Love” UMH #408

Second Reading: Romans 13:8-14 NIVJeff
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

CALL TO WORSHIP Jeff
Followers of Christ, God calls us just as we are to live as truth-tellers and gospel-bringers in the world.
God, we know you call us, and still, we ask, “Who am I that you would call me?”
Like Moses standing before the burning bush convinced of his unworthiness to lead your people out of bo***ge, we ask,
“Who am I that you would call me?”
Like Peter who thought he got it right only to realize that who Jesus is doesn’t meet his expectations of who a Savior should be, we ask,
“Who am I that you would call me?”
As we raise this question to God today, we open our hearts to receive God’s answer:
You are my beloved children. You are my disciples. You are my people called to share the love of God for the transformation of the world. Amen.

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Congregational Song: “Hear I am, Lord”UMH 593

++ Second Reading:Matthew 16: 21-28 NIVJeff
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Communion: Thanksgiving and Communion (pg 13-14) Jeff

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ.
By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your church,
delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant
by water and the Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us he took bread, gave thanks to you,
broke the bread, gave it to his disciples and said:
“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you,
gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ,
that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church,
all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father (God), now and forever.
Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be lost in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”(that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

++Second Reading: “Matthew 14:22-33” NIVJeff
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
