Psalm 14, our meditation Psalm of the week, hits us today with its undiminished and timely truth. We face in our modern time some unprecedented evils (though not uncommon to the faith our forefathers who lived in very hard times, nor uncommon for our fellow brethren around the world who die daily for their faith). Yet, as uncommon as this type of evil is to us, this Psalm reminds us that all those who resist God and say that He is nothing turn to this type of action regularly. “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do ABOMINABLE DEEDS….” And logically so because what rules their life, if it is not God, is and always will be their natural, depraved, debased love of self. This love of oneself will disregard its fellow man always in favor of getting what one desires. In fact, it is willing to steal, kill, and destroy in order to satisfy its greedy longings. It is infuriating to see such evil!
However, before we become too quick tempered against the ones we deem as wicked, this Psalms reminds us that all fall into this category of wickedness.
“There is none who does good.”
“The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are ANY who understand, who seek after God…. They have ALL turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
“There is none who does good… NOT EVEN ONE.”
Who then is the enemy? The left? (the ideologies certainly!) But we are all the enemies of God… all of us. Who deserved salvation? Not a single one. Yet, we know as the book of Romans reminds us that “even when we were yet sinners (in the midst of still sinning), Christ died for us.” He didn’t wait for us to get it right, then offer us salvation. He didn’t say that you must first wash YOURSELF clean then get his gift. We can’t!!!! And yet He still died for us, giving us new life so that may now live for Him. Hallelujah, what a Savior!
These verses then should remind us that though there are wicked men among us, they are not our enemies. Christ called us to love “our enemies” and do good to them (because we were once His enemies). And the greatest way we can love is to share with them the truth of the Gospel message.
This doesn’t mean that their wickedness doesn’t go unpunished. Those that have done evil but have received salvation, Christ has taken their punishment so that there is no longer any condemnation. But for those that do not receive this grace, Psalm 14 has this to say of them.
“Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous.”
I encourage you church to take the wisdom of this Psalm and treasure it in your heart. It makes much sense of the world we live in. With that, we encourage you to use this song as a help in remembering these truths from the wisdom Psalms.
