Imam Ali (AS) said:
“Knowledge gives life to the soul.”
(derived from Dua Kumayl)
Seeking knowledge is more than simply gaining information, it is what truly nourishes and brings life to the soul. In Islam, knowledge is meant to transform us from within, shaping our character, intentions, and actions. Just as the body requires food to survive, the soul requires knowledge to find purpose, clarity, and direction. Without it, a person may feel empty or disconnected, regardless of what they possess in this world. When knowledge is sincerely pursued and put into practice, it brings life to the heart and guides us toward a more meaningful and conscious way of living.

Hadith of the Week 🤲

Imam as-Sadiq (a.s.) has said,

"Seek knowledge even as far as going to the depths of seas."

Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 71, pg. 277

Seeking knowledge is held at immense value in Islam for men and women of all ages. In Islam, there is a stark difference between knowledge and information. It is easy for somebody to memorize facts and figures, but to truly internalize and practice it is easier said than done. Imam Sadiq (as) emphasized building a culture of sharing and spreading knowledge throughout his life. His school brought scholars together from all over, regardless of sect. After their studies, the scholars went back to their towns and villages to share what they had learned. They didn't just know the secrets of science and philosophy and ethics—they had been shaped into new people from it.

As we approach finals week and the end of the semester, let us think about how our education shapes us, regardless of whether it was in a classroom. What can we supplement or change in order to view education the way Imam Sadiq (as) did?

Hadith of the Week 🤲

Imam Musa al-Kazim (as) said:
"One who does not take account of himself every single day is not one of us."
(Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 67, pg. 72)

The act of Muhasabah (Self-Accounting) is held with immense value in Islam. The ahlul-bayt understood how busy our lives could get. With work, school, family, and technology, it is crucial for us to take a step back, disconnect, and reflect on our day.

This is yet another example of Islam recognizing a necessity hundreds of years before science does. According to the Child Mind Institute, journaling is proven to improve mental health, boost immunity, lower blood pressure, and even increase sleep quality.

Inshallah we can start putting this hadith to practice by physically writing in a journal ever day, even if it is just a few sentences.
