Welcome to the 2nd Oldest Catholic Church in Houston

In 1879, the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament founded a school near this site to serve Houston’s Sixth Ward. This Romanesque Revival structure, designed by Patrick S. Rabbit and built in 1901, replaced the earlier sanctuary destroyed in the great hurricane of 1900. Parish Office/ Oficina Parroquial

Saint John the Baptist, Precursor of the Lord, pray for us!

In his message, Archbishop Joe S. Vásquez encourages everyone to read Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas” (“Magnificent Humanity: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence”), inviting us to examine how we use technological innovation so that it uplifts humanity and never serves only limited and selfish interests.

Joseph found happiness not in mere self-sacrifice but in self-gift. In him, we never see frustration but only trust. His patient silence was the prelude to concrete expressions of trust. Our world today needs fathers. It has no use for tyrants who would domineer others as a means of compensating for their own needs. - Pope Francis, Patris Corde

Today on Father’s Day, we pray for all fathers: those who are new dads, grieving a loss, or longing to become fathers. We also pray for husbands facing infertility, that they may be strengthened in their vocation to love.
Saint Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us!

On this Father’s Day, we ask for the special intercession of St. Joseph, patron Saint of fathers.

St. Joseph,
guardian of Jesus and chaste husband of Mary,
you passed your life in loving fulfillment of duty.

You supported the holy family of Nazareth
with the work of your hands.
Kindly protect those who trustingly come to you.

You know their aspirations, their hardships, their hopes.
They look to you because they know you will understand
and protect them.

You too knew trial, labor, and weariness.
But amid the worries of material life
your soul was full of deep peace
and sang out in true joy
through intimacy with God's Son entrusted to you
and with Mary, his tender Mother.

Assure those you protect that they do not labor alone.
Teach them to find Jesus near them and to watch over him faithfully as you have done.

Heavenly Father,
Bless all fathers as they care for their families.
Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience;
support them in the work they have to do,
protecting those who look to them,
as we look to you for love and salvation,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Happy Birthday to Auxiliary Bishop Italo Dell’Oro! May God continue to bless you with wisdom, good health and love.

Please join in wishing him a blessed birthday and a new year of life!

“For I know well the plans I have in mind for you — oracle of the LORD — plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.” Jeremiah 29: 11

On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to read General Order No. 3. It was a blunt declaration: “The people are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” The order established an “absolute equality of personal rights,” marking a tectonic shift in American history, writes Amy Auzenne, director of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis.
