Dominican Family

Dominican Family Dominic founded the Order of Preachers, an order of men and women about 800 years ago in France, whose mission was to preach the Word of God.

The Dominican Family was founded in 2008 to continue the work of Dominic. Who is the Dominican Family? Today, the word “family” has many meanings. We speak of the nuclear family, the extended family, the blended family, the family of the Church and so on. What each has in common is the quality of “inclusion.” To be part of a family means you are included in that group. Therefore, to be a member of

the Dominican Family means you are included as a brother or sister in following the Dominican way of life. Join Us:
Lay Dominicans play an important role in the global Dominican Family. They are women and men - married, single, divorced and widowed who seek to live the Gospel message in their daily lives through relationships in their homes and workplaces. Our Dominican Family is made up of women and men who make a commitment to live life through a Dominican spirit, trying to live intentionally as Dominicans. Preaching the "Good News" through one's work, art and life is the essence of the Dominican Family.

Our new Immigration Action Committee will host our monthly gathering this evening. In response to our Directional Statement from Chapter and requests from family members at later gatherings, the committee has arranged for two speakers.

Gordon Quan, a nationally recognized immigration attorney, will speak on the current state of affairs from a legal perspective.

Monica Holtkamp, the executive director of Casa Mateo, will present to us about her work providing shelter for immigrant women and children who have fled their countries of origin.

Please join us as we explore our Chapter commitment! As usual, please arrive at 6pm to socialize with your fellow Dominican Family members. The program will start at 6:30pm.

Can’t attend in person? Check the flocknote for details for the online zoom option.

When you log on at 6:30 pm, you should be muted for the beginning prayer and presentations. Please stick around for table talk with fellow remote participants.

We are trying a new computer setup and hope the remote experience will be better!

Please join us tomorrow as we gather to celebrate and remember Sr. Ceil Roeger. Sr. Ceil was a guiding light in the Family's efforts to seek collaborators to work for Social Justice.

After this memorial we will transition to a Memorial Lecture by Brandon Mack. Brandon was someone who Sr. Ceil found inspiring and our hope is to honor her memory by inviting a speaker that she would have been excited to listen to. We look forward to seeing you all there!

At the January gathering, a good time was had by all as we played “So You Want to Be a Dominican?”, using a Jeopardy-style game format. Our hilarious MC was Robin Licato, ably assisted by her lovely spotter, flag thrower, and tie-breaker Denia Puerto-Rivera. Three teams of contestant-volunteers answered questions on racial justice, poverty, integral ecology, history of the Dominicans in Houston and more! Catherine Barber was the break-out star of the evening, showing a broad swath of knowledge in all areas. It was funny, fun, and enlightening, and we had great table discussions after the game about what it means to be Dominican and how we can live that out in 2025. Thank you to all who made it a great evening!

At the October 7 gathering we traced the roots of Chapter from St. Dominic to the Dominican Sisters of Houston with the hopes that Dominican Family can partake in this ancient religious experience. Ultimately, Chapter is a time to pray together, speak about, and discern together "what matters most." We hope our Dominican Family Chapter will result in a renewed dedication to our charism and some guidance for our next few years (until the next Chapter)!

We need everyone’s input. The Dominican Family's full participation is needed if our upcoming Chapter (August 2025) is to be a success. Visit the link below for a summary of the October gathering table talk feedback. We hope that you will read it and add your own thoughts to the discussion.

What are we doing? What is Chapter? Why now? What is the point? Join us to explore these questions and more, as Dominican Family begins planning a non-Canonical Chapter. These times of communal discernment mark important moments in the Church and in Dominican life, and we are excited to see what the Holy Spirit has in store for the Dominican Family in the future.

Our September 8th opening gathering was a joyful celebration of “Our 15-Year Journey” as we retraced our path and discussed at table where we want to go in the future. We surprised Sr. Carol with a tribute to her vision, commitment, and unceasing work to bring us here. We closed the evening with a commitment ceremony welcoming 3 new members and praying with our recommitting members in a beautiful ceremony.

The eleven newest Dominican Family members started their journey last September. Each were given a small stone painted with "Begin" to mark the first phase of their Inquiry/Formation journey. And on Sunday, following their Commitment, each received their Dominican Family pin to mark their entry into the Dominican Family. Each one served as one of the ministers in the Mass; spoke their reason for joining the Dominican Family and inscribed their name into the roles of the Dominican Family, which now numbers over 185.

SAVE THE DATE!!!
First Gathering of the Year!
Monday, September 13/6:00 p.m./6501 Almeda Road

It is hard to believe it’s been over a year since we’ve gotten together in person, but the time to start anew is here. Mark your calendars. Our first gathering of the year will be on September 13 at a slightly earlier time of 6:00 p.m. for social time, followed by our gathering from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30ish at the Gathering Hall on Almeda.

It will be so exciting to see everyone in person again, and we’re going to use our time to reflect on where the Dominican Family started from, where we are now and where we’re going as a Family. We’ve got a unique way planned out to let everyone contribute to setting this new course, so come on out on the 13th and share your thoughts.

For safety reasons, we will only have drinks and ice cream bars at the meeting. We are strongly encouraging masks at the meeting in light of the current situation around Texas.

We will also have a zoom link available for those who cannot make it in person this time. We are working to improve the audio since we will have a larger group in the gathering hall. Watch for the Zoom link next week so you can still be part of the meeting!
