HYMN OF THE DAY
The Holy Trinity
May 31, 2026

"Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest" (LSB 498)

1. Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
And make our hearts Your place of rest;
Come with Your grace and heav’nly aid,
And fill the hearts which You have made.

2. To You, the Counselor, we cry,
To You, the gift of God Most High;
The fount of life, the fire of love,
The soul’s anointing from above.

3. In You, with graces sevenfold,
We God’s almighty hand behold
While You with tongues of fire proclaim
To all the world His holy name.

4. Your light to ev’ry thought impart,
And shed Your love in ev’ry heart;
The weakness of our mortal state
With deathless might invigorate.

5. Drive far away our wily foe,
And Your abiding peace bestow;
With You as our protecting guide,
No evil can with us abide.

6. Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And You, from both, as Three in One
That we Your name may ever bless
And in our lives the truth confess.

7. Praise we the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit, with them One,
And may the Son on us bestow
The gifts that from the Spirit flow!

Hymn of the Day
Feast of Pentecost
Sunday, May 24, 2026

Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord (LSB 497)

1 Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord,
With all Your graces now outpoured
On each believer’s mind and heart;
Your fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of Your light
In holy faith Your Church unite;
From ev’ry land and ev’ry tongue
This to Your praise, O Lord, our God, be sung:
Alleluia, alleluia!

2 Come, holy Light, guide divine,
Now cause the Word of life to shine.
Teach us to know our God aright
And call Him Father with delight.
From ev’ry error keep us free;
Let none but Christ our master be
That we in living faith abide,
In Him, our Lord, with all our might confide.
Alleluia, alleluia!

3 Come, holy Fire, comfort true,
Grant us the will Your work to do
And in Your service to abide;
Let trials turn us not aside.
Lord, by Your pow’r prepare each heart,
And to our weakness strength impart
That bravely here we may contend,
Through life and death to You, our Lord, ascend.
Alleluia, alleluia!

From the Pastor:
First-Fruits of the Spirit given on Pentecost

On the 50th day after the resurrection of our Lord, the Apostle along with many believers were present in Jerusalem as Jesus directed. They were there to receive the promised gift, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit.

There were all sorts of people in Jerusalem on that day. It was not a coincidence. It was the Feast of weeks (7 weeks) also known as Shavuot. Basically, this day is the beginning of a harvest festival when thanks would be given to God for the first fruits of the harvest that were being reaped. This was also (since so many were in Jerusalem) the day when the giving of the Word of God on Mount Sinai in the form of the Law was remembered and celebrated.

On the morning of that day, the sound of a mighty rushing wind was heard, although there was no wind. The gathered Christians had divided tongues as of fire resting on them and, being filled with the Holy Spirit, they began to speak the Word of God in the tongues or languages of the hearers.

Those who were searching for the source of the noise of the rushing wind found the believers who were speaking in tongues and what they heard was the declaration of the “mighty works of God” in their own languages. What are the mighty works of God? We have to guess at it. Surely, it was the kinds of things we find summarized in places like the Nicene Creed. Things that have to do with our creation, our redemption, and our being brought to faith by God himself.

Pentecost for Christians is very much like the Feast of Weeks was for the Hebrews. It is a time to remember when God was present and gave his Word to his people to be received and believed with thanks.

See you Sunday!

From the pastor:

He Ascends to Reign in Heaven and on Earth.

On the 40th day after the resurrection, the Ascension of our Lord is observed as a church festival. To be honest, while it is a feast of Christ, church service attendance tends to be low. Perhaps the reason is the day is not recognized as a civil holiday. It could be that the day itself is not very well understood.

What is the Ascension all about? It starts out with the understanding that Jesus began his fully God and fully Man existence among us with the incarnation. For the longest time, the people of God had been waiting for the promised Messiah. In the incarnation of our Lord, he arrived.

After that incarnation, there is the birth, the circumcision, the epiphany and then the growing into manhood for Jesus. Once he reached roughly 30 years of age, Jesus was baptized into our sin. This is the beginning of that great exchange that comes to its peak in the crucifixion where the Lord is taking all of our sin and in trade he will give us all of his righteousness.

On the third day, Jesus rose from the grave demonstrating the truthfulness of all his claims. He really is the one sent to us by God. He really has conquered death by his death. He really is risen from the grave as the first fruit of the resurrection that will come on the last day.

Once Jesus is risen from the grave, because he did all that was given for him to do, everything that follows is something new. What follows?

First, the Ascension. Jesus ascended from among us and has gone to be with the Father. When Jesus goes to the Father, he does not go to retire but to be enthroned as King of Kings and to extend his kingdom in this world which he does through his Word and Sacraments.

Second, Pentecost. When the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit on the 50th day, they send Him with a purpose. The purpose is not to copy anything Jesus has done but to take what Jesus has done, what he has caused (forgiveness), and to grant it, again, through the Word and the Sacraments to his holy people, the Church. This granting is done and will continue to be done by the power of the Spirit until Christ returns on the Last Day.

See you Sunday!
