Ten years ago Verb Church was launched on the Northwest corner of Houston! As I reflect on that season I have three main thoughts:

1) We worked hard to bring that church plant to life and we worked hard to be family to one another other once we launched. I still have such great affection for the people who were a part of the Verb Church journey at any point, for any time.

2) I learned a lot leading this church. Unfortunately, we learn most from our mistakes. There is a lot I would change about my leadership, personal life, and work/life balance if I could go back and remake Verb. However, those hard learned lessons have made me better ever since and I’m proud of those three things I’d change in the way my ministry and life coexist today.

3) Our Core Team planned for Verb Church for a year and a half & Verb existed for a little less than three years of worship and Bible Study. While that was too short a run for the vision God put on our hearts I believe people were/are/continue to be blessed that there was a Verb Church. Ten years later and I am so grateful for the folks who I built that church with, the folks who came to be family there, and those folks who allowed me to love them while we journeyed together.

Though most of us journey far apart now, I love each one of you still. I’ll love you always. Thank you for those cherished days we spent together — that formally started a decade ago.

Pastor JD is back home again in Indiana. We thought you all might want to hear his sermon from the first week in Advent about hope.

"This isn’t one of the easy parts of our faith journey, but more often than we’d like, we must accept the incompleteness of our efforts and trust that an unfinished work does not mean that work hasn’t reached its fullness in our hands, with our effort, for this time."

It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.
