When is Vasant Panchami?
Vasant Panchami, also known as Saraswati Puja, Shree Panchami, or the Basant Festival of Kites is a Sikh and Hindu festival held on the fifth day of the traditional Indian calendar month of Magha (usually early February).

It is a public holiday in the Haryana, Odisha, Tripura and West Bengal regions of India.

The festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring - Vasant Panchami means the fifth day ('Panchami') of Spring ('Vasant'). It takes place 40 days before Holi and marks the start of preparations for that festival.

Traditions of Vasant Panchami
On this day Hindus worship Saraswati Devi, the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, music, art, and culture. Legend has it that Lord Brahma had created the earth and humans, but felt it was all a bit too quiet, so on this day, he created Saraswati by sprinkling some water in the air. As she came from water, she is also called the water deity. Saraswati then filled the world with beautiful music and blessed the world with her voice.

Saraswati has four hands which symbolize ego, intellect, alertness and the mind. She is often pictured seated on a lotus or a peacock, wearing a white dress.

A popular legend associated with Vasant Panchami is a story about a poet called Kalidasa. Kalidasa had somehow ended up marrying a beautiful princess, who kicked him out when she realised he was foolish.

In despair, Kalidasa was planning to kill himself when Saraswati emerged from the river and told him to bathe in the waters. When he did, the water gave him wisdom and led to him writing poetry.

The colour yellow is strongly associated with Vasant Panchami, representing the fields of mustard which a common sight in the Punjab and Haryana areas at this time of year. People wear bright yellow clothes and cook colourful food to mark the beginning of spring, with many of the dishes cooked being yellow, such as "meeth chawal", sweetened rice.

Nandi, also called Nandikeshvara and Nandishvara, is the name of the gate keeper of Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva. He is usually depicted as a bull which also serves as the mount to Shiva. He is one of the Gana of Shiva. Nandi is the bearer of truth and righteousness. The word Nandi has come from Tamil root word Nandhu means to grow, to flourish or to appear which was used to indicate growing fluorished white bulls as well as divine bull nandi. The Sanskrit word nandi has the meaning of "happy", "joy" and "satisfaction"; also said as the properties of divine guardian of Lord Shiva - Nandi. Almost all Shiva temples display stone images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine. Nandi is described as the son of the sage Shilada. Shilada underwent severe penance to have a boon ; a child with immortality and got Nandi as his son. It is said that Nandi was born from a Yajna performed by the Shilada and his body was clad in armour made out of diamonds when he was born. Nandi grew as an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and he did penance to become the gate-keeper of the Lord Shiva as well as his mount. Nandi got the divine knowledge of Agamic and Ta***ic wisdom taught by Lord Shiva from goddess Parvati. He could teach that divine knowledge to his Eight disciples who are identified as the progenitors of Nandinatha Sampradaya - Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana, Sanatkumara, Tirumular, Vyagrapada, Patanjali and Sivayoga Muni. These eight disciples are directed to eight directions of the world by Nandinatha to spread the wisdom he taught them. There are many legends about Nandi. One describes his conflict with Ravana, the King of Lanka. Nandi cursed Ravana that his kingdom would be burnt by a monkey. Later Hanuman ji burnt Lanka when he went in search of Maa Sita, who was kept prisoner by Ravana in Ashoka Vaatika

Shani Jayanti- Wednesday 9th June 2021-

Shanidev, the son of Lord Surya is said to be born on the Amavasya of Vaishakh month. This day is celebrated as Shani Jayanti, his birth anniversary. In Vedic astrology, planet Saturn is referred to as Lord Shani and has a colossal impact on human life. People who are experiencing the effects of Shani Sade Sati pray to the Lord on this day. Many devotees also conduct fasting to please Lord Saturn and gain blessings of good luck and great fortune. Therefore, there is great importance of Shani Jayanti 2021.

Saturn is the slowest planet of all. Many people consider it negative due to its influence on their lives. But, that is not the case in real sense. Shani is a strict master, a disciplinarian that bestows one with victory only after continuous effort, dedication, and passing the hurdles with confidence. Hence, it is also called as the planet of Karma or the Justice Lord.

When Shani showers his blessings on people, they never have to experience tough times, and are successful in the most righteous way. Along with that, Shanidev bestows them with incredible gains and auspicious times. Saturn impacts various facets of one’s life along with their career. Thus, Shani can turn out to be miraculous if posited favourably in one’s horoscope, but can also be problematic if placed unfavourably.

What The Legends Say About Shani Dev

As per the traditional texts, Saturn is known to be the son of Suryadev and Chhaya. Shani was ill-treated and doomed by his wife and heavenly mother Parvati. However; once she realized her mistake, Parvatidevi gave a blessing to Shani that there will not occur any important event in a person’s life unless Shanidev blesses that deed. That occasion should either be blessed with a favourable transit or an aspect to a suitable house in one's birth chart.

Ancient traditions also depict Shani as the elder brother of Yama (Lord of death), and hence, Shani may also play Yama’s part in ending an individual’s earthly life. He also signifies detachment due to being a greatly spiritual planet and the teachings it brings to a native.
Shani Jayanti Rituals

A particular Shani Graha Shanti Puja, and havan are done on this day. One can perform the puja by visiting Shani temple or any Navagraha temple.
Take gangajal, panchamrit, oil, and water in this order and wash the idol of Lord Shani.
Recite Shani Stotra or Shanti paath to appease the Lord and pray for the elimination of obstacles from your life.
Donating black items such as black til, black clothes, and mustard oil is considered favourable on this day.
