Dear friends, we pray for those affected by Hurricane Helene, which has the highest mortality rate since Katrina and caused considerable damage.

We are in conversation with staff in the three synods most affected: North Carolina Synod, the South Carolina Synod, the Southeastern Synod. Deacon Dorie Jones has been in contact with disaster-related staff in other synods and I have been in contact with the bishops.

It is too early for people to go there. The synods have not yet asked for direct donations for ministries directly affected. For those wishing to help, we recommend Lutheran Disaster Response.

Good info to know and share

If you lost power during , do you know how long the food in your fridge and freezer is safe? In general it's 4 hours in the fridge and 24-48 hours in the freezer if you keep the doors shut the whole time.

SNAP

HHSC has received federal approval to allow SNAP recipients impacted by Hurricane Beryl to apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed.

Recipients in 121 counties listed in Acting Governor Patrick’s disaster declarations can apply by dialing 2-1-1 and selecting Option 8.

Those applying for replacement benefits have until August 8 to apply.

As of now, FEMA Individual Assistance is not available yet. Texas Gulf Coast Regional VOAD (Greater Houston VOAD) encourages everyone to report damage on iSTAT. This will help give agencies info needed to respond more effectively.
