St. James UMC

St. James UMC The Fourth Ward emerged as Houston's most prominent African-American neighborhood when thousands of freed slaves flooded into the city after emancipation.

These newcomers settled on the fringes of the third, fifth, and fourth wards. The Freedmentown area north of San Felipe and the streets west of downtown not only attracted the largest number of the new black residents but also housed the first black churches, schools, and political organizationsThe Fourth Ward in Houston, also sometimes referred to as Freedmen's Town, is one of that city's most im

portant African-American historic communities. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was the center of black cultural and professional life in the city.Fourth Ward provided a home to early black religious and educational institutions. It had, in fact, achieved this distinction even before emancipation. In 1851 black Methodists began worshiping in their own church, adjacent to the white Methodist church on Milam Street in the Fourth Ward. This black church briefly housed a school for blacks in the late 1850s.

Remembering Ronald J. Fleming
1948-2021
It is with great sadness the Network of Brothers (NOB) regret to inform you of the passing of its Vice Chairman of the Board - Ronald J. Fleming Saturday, February 13, 2021. Ron fervently served and guided NOB’s efforts to affirm and mentor marginalized boys and young men in the greater Houston area. Recently retired; Ron served as the Regional Director for the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) - Houston. We will truly miss his leadership and his gift as the ‘quintessential extemporaneous orator’.

A native Houstonian and Evan E. Worthing High School graduate; Ron went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in political science from Huston–Tillotson College, served in the United Stated military, earned a master’s degree from Duke University, and a doctorate of jurisprudence from Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

Ron’s affiliations included a lifelong membership at St. James United Methodist Church (Board of Trustees), Huston–Tillotson University (Board of Regents), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and the Network of Brothers. Please keep the Fleming family in your prayers! He leaves to mourn his wife LaSonya, his twin son’ s Kaz and Kirk, his step-daughter LaTerra Colston, his eldest brother Robert H. Fleming Jr., his sister Catherine Fleming, sister LaRue Hart (J. T. Hart), his twin brother Donald J. Fleming, Esq., nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family members.
