Around 1935, Frederick McKinley Jones invented the air-cooling units used in food transport trucks. Over the course of his life, he was awarded more than 60 patents, 40 of which involved refrigeration equipment.

Jones received a patent for his portable air-cooling units for trucks in July 1940. During WWII, the cooling units were especially important for delivering food, medicine and blood to battlefields and hospitals.

In 1991, Frederick McKinley Jones was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology. He was the first African American to receive the award.
