It is 3:01 p.m. Everyone in the crowd knows that Jesus has died. There is chaos. The people who have just witnessed Jesus' death are so distraught that they beat their chests. In that moment, the ground begins to shake violently. Some run; others fall to their face in tears. Everyone is full of fear. A soldier who holds Jesus' robe looks up to Jesus and gives words to the thought that is running through everyone's mind, "Surely this man was the Son of God."

It is 3:00 p.m. Jesus groans at the top of his lungs as the pain overwhelms him. He pushes on his feet, but his legs will not respond. He pulls as hard as he can on his arms. They don't move. He is suffocating. His lungs have filled with fluid. He hears his mom cry out. He wants to respond. He can't. He tries again to exhale. His body will not respond. Reality is fading fast. Jesus cannot see. He cannot breathe. His head falls to his chest; his body is limp. Jesus has died.

It is 2:58 p.m. Jesus pushes on his feet. He pulls on his arm. He feels the nails tearing flesh. "It is finished."

It is 2:55 p.m. Jesus' miraculous birth, childhood, and public ministry have led to this moment. He feels life slipping away with every second. He pulls on his arms, but they hardly move his body. It is 2:40 p.m. Something is wrong. Jesus is no longer feeling the pain from the lashes on his back. The thorns that are lodged deep in his head, from the crown the guards placed on him, no longer cause his head to pulse with pain. The pain he is feeling is not something he has ever felt. The agony he feels now is far worse than anything he has endured in the last 15 hours. Then he realizes what it is. He is alone. This is not the loneliness he felt in the garden when the disciples had fallen asleep. This is separation. He no longer feels the presence of his father. The continual line of communication that he has always enjoyed is nowhere to be found. The constant comfort from the Holy Spirit is gone. He pushes down on his feet, the nails tear nerves, pain shoots through his entire body. He pulls on his arms with all the strength he has left, "FATHER?" There is no answer. He pulls himself up once again, "FATHER, WHERE ARE YOU?"

It is 2:25 p.m. In the complete darkness, Jesus has continued to be able to see his mother Mary, head bowed, unable to look up at his gruesome body. John is still there, weeping quietly. But now, their images begin to fade. Jesus' sight is slowly slipping away. The world grows even darker for Jesus. Every gasp of air brings with it the suffocating inability to exhale. Jesus pulls on his arms, his body rises, he lets out a breath, blood trickles down to his chin.

It is 2:15 p.m. There is a jar of wine vinegar nearby. A soldier takes a sponge and soaks it in the wine vinegar. He lifts it to Jesus' mouth. He feels the coolness on his lips but cannot taste it. He is sensing that he is almost done bridging the gap between God and humanity.

It is 2:00 p.m. Jesus has been on the cross for 5 hours. He barely clings to life. Moments from his past are racing through his mind. "Mom was so mad when I stayed in the temple when I was a kid.... Dad was so happy when I could finally carve our initials into furniture we had made.... The look on Zacchaeus face when I looked up at him in the tree." Moments of distraction from the pain are gone as soon as they arrive. Jesus has not eaten since he shared the Passover meal with the disciples. That was 19 hours ago. He is dehydrated. He pushes on his feet, pain shoots through his entire body. "I'm so thirsty."

It is 1:00 p.m. It has been as dark as night for one hour. The crowds are no longer mocking Jesus. They are curious. Why isn't the sun shining? They had seen him do so many miracles. No doubt some of them believed Jesus might actually come down off the cross. He hangs there, bleeding to death, his body going into shock, often on the edge of suffocation as his lungs begin to fill with fluid. And while he could have called on a thousand angels to rescue him, he does not.

It's 12:00 p.m. In the middle of the day, when the sun is at its highest, the sky goes black. It is as dark as night. The people watching Jesus are shocked. They're afraid. They don't know that in this moment, all of creation is in mourning.

It is 11:00 a.m. Jesus received a beating this morning designed to inflict as much punishment as the body can stand without death. After that he was nailed to a cross through his wrists and the tendon area of his heels. And now, he has been on the cross for two hours. He has lost a lot of blood. His body is fatigued. While he can breath, he can only exhale by pulling himself up by his arms or putting weight on his feet which are nailed to the cross. He is slowly dying. He pushes himself up and holds himself there so he can speak to his mother Mary, and to John, his closest friend. "Mom, John will be your son from now on.” Jesus looks directly into John’s eyes. Tears fall from Jesus’ eyes, “John, take care of my mom."
