🌿 Keep Hollywood Beautiful Begins September 14 🌿

Historic Hollywood Cemetery’s bi-annual cemetery-wide cleanup campaign begins September 14. This effort helps us maintain a safe, dignified, and peaceful resting place for everyone entrusted to our care.

Before September 14, families are encouraged to visit and take home any personal, sentimental, or temporary decorations they wish to keep.

As an additional courtesy, certain gravesites with larger noncompliant items- such as fencing, rocks, or unauthorized markers- will be flagged this week to give families additional time to remove them before the cleanup begins. Smaller prohibited items and general decorations will not be individually flagged.

We understand that decorations are placed with love. As a perpetual care cemetery, we also have a responsibility to keep the grounds safe, accessible, and properly maintained for all families.

As Houston celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Julia Ideson Building, we’re honoring the woman whose vision helped shape our city’s public library system.

Today, we’re celebrating Julia Ideson and 100 years of the beautiful building that bears her name! 📚🤍

Since opening in 1926, the Julia Ideson Building has inspired generations of Houstonians through its remarkable architecture and the countless stories preserved within its walls. The celebration honors both this historic landmark and its namesake, Houston Public Library’s first librarian, Julia Ideson.

🤍 FamilySearch is a wonderful place to start your genealogy journey. In addition to family trees and historical records, Historic Hollywood Cemetery’s old burial records have been digitized on FamilySearch. To access them, visit the Records section, search for “Historic Hollywood Cemetery,” and you’ll be able to explore our digitized records from wherever you are.

Historic Hollywood Cemetery has carried its name for well over a century, but have you ever wondered where it came from? 🤔

Despite what many people assume, our name has no connection to Hollywood, California!

Historic Hollywood Cemetery was named after the Hollywood family, who were among the early families connected to the property and the cemetery’s history. Their name became part of this place long before “Hollywood” became synonymous with the film industry.

Over the years, our cemetery has witnessed Houston’s growth, welcomed generations of families, and preserved the stories of those who helped shape our community. While the city around us has changed, our mission has remained the same: to honor lives, preserve history, and provide a place of remembrance 🤍

Every headstone, every tree, and every pathway has a story to tell, and sometimes, even the name of the cemetery is one of those stories. 🕊️
