Dear Heights Church Family and Friends,

As we gather today to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, I am writing to ask you to pause and join me in prayer.

Yesterday one of our pastors, Dr. Robert B. Sloan, suffered a major health event. All medical efforts to save his life were ineffective and he died early this morning surrounded by his family.

Please join me in prayer for his wife, Sue Sloan, his son and our pastor, Dr. Paul T. Sloan, and Robert and Sue’s other children and grandchildren. Join me in prayer for our friends at Houston Christian University and for Robert’s many friends and colleagues around the world. Join me in prayer for our church as we navigate the days to come.

It was one of the high distinctions of my professional life to work directly with Robert in leading our church through some of her most challenging days. His wisdom, counsel, quiet and strong presence, and his friendship will always mean more to me than I can fully express.

Tomorrow we will gather for fellowship, study, and worship as usual. And I pray you will join us in person or online. We are grateful to Dr. Chris Kugler who will teach and preach tomorrow morning.

It is a Sabbath marked by sorrow. ⁠
⁠
The work is finished...⁠
but the silence remains.⁠
⁠
"Be still, and know that I am God," says the psalmist,⁠
"and I will be exalted among the nations,⁠
I will be exalted in the earth."
